An Electronic Cigarette Association has been launched with a You Tube movie address by its President, former congressman Matt Salmon.

The association, which has been formed by private companies involved in producing or marketing the electronic cigarette, aims both to establish industry wide standards and to provide information for media and decision makers.

In his address Matt Salmon, who has experienced personal tragedy from smoking, spoke out strongly in favour of  electronic cigarettes, stating:

"The vapor they emit contains only 20 ingredients, all of which are considered safe for
human consumption including nicotine, whereas tobacco smoke contains 4,000 ingredients including arsenic and carbon monoxide, and dozens of ingredients that cause cancer."

The former legislator also acknowledged the dangers to the new product from those with established interests in maintaining the current situation with tobacco, while at the same time criticising those who are attempting to have the device banned, pointing out that:

"...withholding electronic cigarettes from the market is like telling someone who chooses to smoke that his or her only legal option is to smoke tobacco, which is the leading form of preventable death in the US and is responsible for 400,000 deaths per year - more than
AIDS, drugs, homicides, fires and auto accidents combined..."
