A glimpse into the mindset of the average member of the Taliban
Militants in northern Pakistan have triggered a medical emergency by refusing to allow health officials to conduct a polio vaccination campaign.

Extremist clerics have used mosque loudspeakers and illegal radio stations to spread the idea that the vaccinations cause infertility and are part of a US-sponsored anti-Muslim plot...

Swat had recorded 4 cases of polio last year of the total 53 recorded by NWFP and the tribal areas. Pakistan had 118 cases in 2008.

The WHO recorded 39 cases of polio in Pakistan in 2006, up from 28 in 2005. The disease is concentrated in NWFP where 60% of the refusals were attributed to “religious reasons”.

Militants in the tribal areas of Bajaur and Mohmand have also opposed polio vaccinations.

Dr Abdul Ghani was killed by a roadside bomb in Bajaur in 2007 as Islamist militants tried to halt a polio immunisation campaign.

According to the telegraph report, Taliban had agreed to allow the polio vaccine campaign and obviously reneged.

Polio is a horrifying disease.

This is horrifying. Do they even have a clue? what might help is maybe some of those old posters from March of Dimes, of children in crutches with their twisted limbs.

Noticed how it is always the children who suffer? As the innocent victims of the Aids pandemic or anything else you care to name the rights of children get lost or where never there in the first place.When the rights oc children are taken seriously around the world we'll be moving towards a more compassionate, balanced world.

Oh, adults get it too. These lies are a way of isolating and alienating the tribes from real assistance and help from the West and from their own government. It is similar to the tactics of Hamas, the Arabs claim the Israelis poison the food and medicine they send to Gaza, etc.
