Beef Recall - Ground Beef E_ Coli Outbreak Recall Announced In New England

A beef recall was issued by Fairbank Farms for ground beef with a sell-by date from September 19-28. 28 people have gotten sick after eating the tainted beef, and two deaths are being related to E. coli infection, mainly in New England. One person in New Hampshire has died from eating meat tainted with E. coli. Over 500,000 pounds of beef have been recalled.

The CDC said a New York adult with underlying medical conditions had died and another possibly related death in New Hampshire was under investigation. State officials attribute the New Hampshire death to the O157:H7 E. coli bacteria.

If you bought and froze meat from Acme Markets, BJ's Wholesale Club, Ford Brothers, Giant Food Stores, Price Chopper, Trader Joe's, or Shaw Supermarkets, check the beef and don't eat it if it bears the sell-by dates above. Instead, bring it back to where you bought it for a refund.

Consumers are advised to look for packages with sell-by dates of Sept. 19 through Sept. 28. The number "EST. 492" would also be inside the USDA inspection mark or on the nutrition label.
The recall is ineffect for all Northeraster and Mid-Atlantic state.
The packages were sold under a variety of brand names, ranging from Acme Markets' Lancaster Brand Ground Beef and Extra Lean Ground Beef to Giant Food Stores Meatloaf and Meatball Mix to Trader Joe's Butcher Shop Fine Quality Meats Ground Beef.
