Dubai's obsession with having the biggest, tallest and widest of everything in the world seems to have been taken to the extreme. They now have the fattest cops in the world too!

Dozens of police officers are going to be put through a fitness boot camp to improve their health. The Society Service Department at Dubai Police has been monitoring the weight of officers and has drawn up a list of 85 people to be sent on a fitness course. Some of the officers weighed more than 100kg.

“From 12 police departments and police stations, we have gathered 85 policemen of different ranks to be in our programme, which is aimed at reducing their weight,” said Major Abdullah Hassan Jasim, from the department. “Their first day will be on March 22 to increase their fitness through a variety of sporting activities according to their ages.” The campaign was launched last month under the logo ‘Your Health in Sport’, as reported in 7DAYS. It was launched after the force noticed weight gain among some policemen.

A team from Fitness First Sports training measured the policemen and gave them a lecture about the best way to eat healthily. “The instructors asked them to take regular sports activities and avoid smoking and staying out late at night,” the major said. The fitness programme will involve four days’ training per week for three months. “They will start early in the morning with two hours of sports exercise, including press ups and sit ups, walking and running for different distances between 800m and 1km,” said Jasim.

Participants will be divided into age categories and will also get medical advice on how to improve their health. Jasim said: “We want to make sport a part of their lifestyle and improve their overall health.” The force will also continue to monitor the weight of other serving officers.
