It must have felt like Deja vu for Scottish Firefighter, Kevin Ogilvie. Only last summer was he sacked from his position with Grampian Fire and Rescue Service after being told his weight was a major problem.

A near strike by Mr Ogilvie's fellow firefighters was slimly avoided after the Fire Service management reinstated Mr Ogilvie to his full position but only under the demand by his employers that he lose weight and improve his fitness in just three months.

Unfortunately, for Mr Ogilvie, his efforts never met the expectations of the Grampian Fire and Rescue Service and after 22 years service his contract was terminated.

Public opinion is split over the firefighters sacking as many feel that if he was unfit for the job then he should have been relieved of his duties and the matter ended there. While some feel that giving the firefighter three months to achieve a somewhat impossible goal was a no-win situation and that the Fire Service were using Mr Ogilvie as a public guinea pig.

Now, all eyes are on the Firemen within the service to see how they will react to the sacking. Whatever the outcome it seems clear that the Scottish Fire Service have issued a clear message to current and future employees that they expect their firefighters to be fit to carry out their duties.

To be a firefighter you need to be fit, and he wasn't.

I suppose it's unfair after working for the fire services all those years, but saftey of the staff and public comes first.

@mudricky, I agree with your comment but I feel that the Fire Service has failed in dealing with this guys problem.

Dismissing him after 22 years service and in such a public way shows no respect to Mr Ogilvie whatsoever. They could have tried to find a solution to this problem but chose the public route to send a message.
