The Gummy Bear Song - Full Length (English)

Gummy bears may be the solution for tooth decay problems amongst children.

According to a U.S. study, xylitol, the sugar substitute may help prevent tooth decay. Xylitol is actually a naturally-occurring sugar alcohol. It is used frequently as a sweetener and has been shown to reduce levels of mutans streptococci bacteria which is known to cause tooth decay.

Researchers gave children four xylitol-sweetened gummy bears three times a day during school hours. After six weeks, there were significant reductions in the levels of harmful mutans streptococci (MS) bacteria in the children's plaque. MS is known to cause tooth decay.

Xylitol, a naturally-occurring sugar alcohol that's frequently used as a sweetener, has been shown to reduce levels of MS. Xylitol chewing gums are available but aren't considered suitable for younger children.

So what's with the gummy bears? Xylitol chewing gums are already available to the public, but are those sticky, synthetic rubber pieces ideal for children? So, experts are now turning to the gummy bear for a gummy-based cavity prevention program.

"For xylitol to be successfully used in oral health promotion programs amongst primary school children, an effective means of delivering xylitol must be identified. Gummy bears would seem to be more ideal than chewing gum," research leader Kiet A. Ly, of the University of Washington, said in a BioMed Central news release.

"Based on our findings, it is feasible to develop a clinical trial of a gummy-based (cavity) prevention program. Such a study is now being carried out in the East Cleveland primary school district," Ly said.

I would like to participate in such a study. Teehee.

It's an interesting idea, but won't it just get the kids into the habit of eating sweets (or 'candy' as I believe our colonial cousins call it)?  Surely, it's a short-term gain for a long term loss.

Now I have a really good reason to keep them as my favorite candy snack. My picture was taken while visiting a candy store in Redmond, WA taking pictures of all sorts of candies practicing with my macro lens.

That is... interesting, certainly. Although I fear that my gummy-graveyard cake kinda defeats the tooth-health purpose. I mean, WOULD the gummies counteract all the bad sugars in the chocolate cake and frosting? How many gummies would you have to eat to do so? Inquiring minds want to know!

I decided that I wanted to convey how stupid conforming to the media and society looks. If you don't look different than anyone else you don't have an identity of your own.

This was a pain to shoot, but I LOVED IT!!! I particularly like the lighting and the great shadows the gummy bears gave on the glass table top. If this tryout with Gummy Bears works widely I would be in anti-cavity heaven :D Go Gummy Bears!

My friend and I took a trip to Asheville, NC and decided that we would each have a gummy bear represent us and say "gummy bears go to the lake" "gummy bears like to recycle" "gummy bears take a trip to the mountains" etc. Except our gummy bears were named Ms. Barrymore and No Doz. An inside joke....
