When it comes to getting pregnant, good nutrition can be the cornerstone of success. In fact, many of the very same nutritional principals that help your baby to develop and grow while you are pregnant, can also impact fertility.

But in addition to simply eating a well balanced diet, there is some good science to show that certain foods, alone or in combination with others, can not only have a direct impact on ovulation, and your ability to get pregnant, but also help you get there quicker and easier! Affecting everything from hormone production to the development of healthier stronger, more fertile eggs in women, and the creation of heartier, healthier sperm in men, there are a number of foods spread across all the food groups that can make a difference.

To help you get started thinking in the right direction, here are five fertility food secrets – foods that science has shown can make an important difference when you're trying to conceive.

Fertility Food Secret # 1 – Almonds -

Studies conducted by Tufts University found that, ounce for ounce, almonds offer the highest protection from free radical damage - a type of “cell stress” that can cause a number of fertility problems. This includes impacting egg growth and development and interfering with ovulation. Most recently studies show free radical cell damage has also been linked to “unexplained infertility.”

BONUS: Once for ounce when you eat almonds you get the same level of nutrient protection found in broccoli, black and green tea, and onions!

Fertility Food Secret # 2: Wheat Germ

High in vitamin B6, Vitamin E and selenium – all nutrients that can protect against miscarriage - wheat germ also contains phytonutrients essential to the production of female hormones, and necessary to maintain the proper ratio between estrogen and progesterone.

Fertility Food Secret # 3: Pizza with lots of tomatoes and onions

This one is for the guys – and it can have a whopper effect on sperm! Studies show that cooked tomatoes are packed with lycopene, a nutrient that can help sperm develop and grow. So the more you eat, the heartier and healthier your sperm will be. Onions are loaded with the mineral selenium – which is necessary for the production of healthy sperm.

Fertility Food Secret # 4: Canola Oil

You've probably heard lots of talk about the heart-healthy effects of olive or grape seed oil. And both are great for your heart. But when it comes to boosting fertility, drizzle your salad with canola oil and your fertility will prosper. Why? Canola oil is loaded with omega 3 fatty acids – a “healthy fat” that is essential to making healthy eggs. Olive and grape seed oils have almost none!

Fertility Food Secret # 5: Sweet Potatoes

This tasty fall veggie is loaded with beta carotene, the nutrient your body uses to make Vitamin A. How can this help fertility? Beta carotene is an essential component of follicular fluid – that semi-liquid substance that surrounds your eggs and aids in their growth and development. Because follicular fluid pulls beta carotene from the bloodstream, when levels are low, your eggs may not be as healthy, so they are harder to fertilize – even when undergoing fertility treatments like IVF.

That man in the sky also gives us the tools to help us be the best and healthiest we can be  - and among those tools are healthy , natural foods. It's not the sweet potatoes - it's the nutrients they contain that can make a difference.  Without good, nourishing whole foods we could not survive  - and every day studies show that what we eat does make a difference, when it comes to heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, even cancer. So why wouldn't it also help fertility?A multitude of studies shows it can.

It's not about selling books - it's about writing books and passing on information  that can  help people improve their lives and their health  and maybe turn their reproductive odds around too.
