Ive been reading an interesting thread in the very new Pet Doctor Forum, about flea control in pets.

Is flea control a scam? Why do we need to buy it every month?

Well, vets help explain on this site WHY its useful.

Some of their comments include-

- I have seen fleas many many times and they can be very itchy, and can spread quickly throughout the house, and be incredibly difficult to eradicate
-if you live with a house with carpets or fabrics on the sofa etc, its very hard to clean these areas so flea eggs can live here a long time, hence once you get an outbreak, its hard to ever get rid of it- they can bite people too
- eggs can lay dormant for months. Its not uncommon for fleas to hatch out of eggs when new tenants move into a flat where the flat may have been vacant for months, but perhaps there was a pet there before with fleas.
- fleas can transmit diseases to pets
-fleas can cause Allergic dermatitis in some pets, ie an allergic severe rash..
So yes, you need regular preventative treatment, its not some conspiracy to make vets money.
Its probably cheaper and easier to prevent it than to cure it- like many things. (Bank subprime loan debacle one example... ha ha)tI found it a good read and well written!

And its certainly a contraversial topic!!

Also, we don't have a pet doctor forum.
