A study just released by the online magazine Neurology has good news regarding multiple sclerosis and pregnancy. The study headed by Eliza Chakravarty of Standford University in California looked at the data from nearly 19 million deliveries. Of those in the database, about 10 000 were deliveries from women with MS. While the women with MS had a small increase in incidents of small babies and were more likely to have a cesarean delivery than the generally healthy women, it was a small difference.
The study also showed that women with MS had no more complications of pregnancy than the healthy population.
"These results are reassuring for women with MS," said study author Eliza Chakravarty, MD, MS, of Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, CA. "Women and their doctors have been uncertain about the effect of MS on pregnancy, and some women have chosen to delay or even avoid pregnancy due to the uncertainty. We found that women with MS did not have an increased risk of most pregnancy complications."
