GPs blame “overwhelming pressure” caused by massive workloads and increasingly complex cases.
Eighty-five per cent of the doctors polled by the Royal College of General Practitioners thought general practice was “in crisis”.
The findings provoked dismay from patients’ groups that highly paid professionals cannot guarantee the basic expectation of safe patient care. Figures last year showed GPs earned, on average, £104,100 before tax.
The RCGP survey of 258 family doctors across Britain found a fifth were forced to seek help for work-related stress.
Some 49 per cent said they were under so much pressure they could not promise safe patient care.
