Hangover Cures for a New Year Hangover: Tips, Tricks and Recipes
After the fun and excitement and parties of New Year's Eve, it is inevitable that if you have been drinking the night before, you will suffer January 1st 2010 with a New Year's hangover.
We have put together some hangover cures to help fight off that New Year's hangover, some tips and tricks to do before you start drinking, and some recipes to help get you through New Year's Day if nothing else will work.
Prevention tips to avoid getting a hangover:
Some people swear by these prevention tips, others say nothing can prevent a night of too much drinking. But it might be worth a try?
- Eating a meal that is high in polyunsaturated fat can help the effects of the drinking wear off longer. Foods that contain polyunsaturated fat include fish, whole grain wheat, peanut butter and bananas.
- Drinking a sports drink that is high in electrolytes will help your body replenish what they lose during drinking (this also can help if you drink one before bed).
- Some say that two teaspoons of evening primrose oil will also help prevent getting a hangover (haven't heard of anyone who has tried this though).
Tricks to cure your hangover:
- Drinking lots of water - both before bed and the next day.
- Do not drink coffee - it may be tempting but the caffeine will only dehydrate you more.
- Try drinking flat ginger ale if you don't want to drink only water.
- Eat something simple like toast or fruit
- Sleep in if you can - and even get up, have some water of some toast and go back to bed as that will make you feel the best.
- Some people swear that drinking a Bloody Mary is the best way to cure a hangover.
- Some simple exercise can also help, however some feel that a brisk run is the best way for them.
- Take a shower and alternate between hot and cold water.

This next one is a breakfast casserole and has some simple ingredients that will not affect your stomach too much. It does require some prep time however.
1 tsp. plus 1 T. unsalted butter
12 large eggs
11/2 cups milk
1/2 cup heavy cream
pinch freshly grated nutmeg
pinch cayenne pepper
1 tsp. Kosher salt
1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
1 cup diced baked ham
1 T. minced flat leaf parsley
11/2 tsp. thinly sliced fresh chives
2 cups shredded extra sharp cheddar cheese (about 8 oz)
1 pound sourdough bread (boule preferred) crust removed and cut into 1 inch cubes
For the rest of the ingredients and a full list of instructions, click the link above.
If a full breakfast casserole does not appeal to you, keep it simple with a banana or a bowl of cereal.
Or try the traditional recipe of bacon, eggs, beans, toast and fried potatoes. Many swear by that.
Regardless of how you spend your New Year's be safe, don't drink and drive and don't overdo it!
