to Higgs or not to Higgs; the soul
Over the last couple of days, I've been perusing the reports and discussion surrounding the new 'discovery' at CERN. Yea, they found 'the Higgs'.. Woopie.
Forget about the results for a moment and look at the bigger picture. There were vast regions on the energy scale being excluded in great swaths.. (Most of the areas it was looking 'nothing detected'.) Until recently, no candidate Higgs was ever found at any other energy level.. Why is that? Was it all some kind of drawn-out set-up to make us believe 'the chase was on!' “We're gonna find that varmit if it's the last thing we do!” And that's about how it worked out.. The very last slim window.. Saved for last.. Smack in the middle of energy ranges.. Gee, why didn't they look there to begin with? To draw out the 'exploratory process' so that the hunt would take years. And tons of resources.. ^^ Seeing more clearly now?
We've been set-up by pros. They knew where to look for this mythical particle all along. And just because they 'find' it now don't mean they didn't know about it before or where to look.. It's called good science and I can't knock them for that.. What bothers me is this infantile clutching to reductionism .. Let's back up a bit.. If they saw some early indication in the data there might be a candidate Higgs at the specified energy level, it's best to keep that under wraps until corroborated. Ostensibly, good science. But.. Because of my training in the systems approach, there's a limit on applying reduction to solving broad classes of problems: those systems with synergy or 'symbiotic interdependency' among major system components. The idea 'the whole is greater than the sum of its parts' means some systems must be examined more holistically. It's a fact of the range of complexity we find in our universe.
Why are quantum systems synergistic to the point we must use the systems approach to analyze them? I can't answer that question anymore than we can say why thirteen to twenty parameters define our reality. How has reduction been over-used in physics? By assuming every force is mediated by virtual bosons. 'Perhaps' there are some that are not; perhaps the concept is faulty to begin with? ^^ When our core concepts become untestable, we are no longer 'talking science', it becomes something else.. So.. The core ideas of the Standard Model don't belong to science, reduction is not applicable to quantum systems by nature of their inherent synergy, so any experiment dealing with the Standard Model does not deserve funding or attention.
They knew they would find 'the Higgs' around that energy level.. What is it? A short-lived unstable very heavy particle. Does that mean it mediates mass? That's like saying the clucking in the hen-yard has some correlation with the behavior of the market today. 'Random' variables where one is largely controlled by very few elite families. Just like academia and 'research'.. ^^ Years ago, they proposed 'mediators of the weak 'force'': W and Z bosons.. They 'found' them as intermediate decay products in several chains observed.. That's like finding eggs by the side of the road (never seeing eggs before) after some fell off a transport truck: “Gee, eggs must be produced by trucks!” Just because we observe some intermediate decay products in some chains does not mean they mediate forces! That's stretching observations and reduction to the point of absurdity.
This 'discussion' and events of recent past suggest the idea to me: 'the soul' is a symbiotic organism with a 'body' (biological substrate). You kill the body, the soul has no choice but to depart. If a soul animates a body and it needs a host, there's a reason why human bodies have souls: the soul needs the body as much as the body needs the soul. ^^ For most of my life, I've avoided 'the soul' in preference for 'the mind' and awareness. It's an anachronism with 'no basis in reality'.. ^^ But.. It's 'hard' to reconcile spiritual awareness with scientific.. Especially when every camp is claiming exclusive ownership of Truth and God. :( ^^ However, I feel I should share some recent epiphanies concerning all things just mentioned.. As I take more steps into the spiritual realm, I lose my ability to effectively communicate the associated ideas to you dear reader.. Please forgive this.. It's not so much 'losing my mind' as losing my connection with humanity and therefore the ability to communicate effectively with the rest of us.. I'll try my best to transmit the 'raw data' without too much interpretation..
I'm not sure what the 'soul' exactly is but it appears to be a symbiotic organism that requires a 'host body' as much as that body needs sentient guidance. Why is death so painful in most cases? Because the soul is forced to detach from its host. It's like ripping the heart out of an animal expecting it to live; no animal can live without a heart; all human bodies seem to require a soul to guide them .. I'm not stating these ideas from premise/assumptions. I'm stating them from 'observations' in the spiritual realm.. ^^ Allow me to elaborate..
When you are on 'cruise control', your awareness is exceedingly limited. You're probably day-dreaming and 'boom!' - you're shocked into awareness you had momentarily 'lost it'. ^^ Sound familiar? If so, you're aware of different 'levels of awareness'.. ^^ This can be extended to different kinds of consciousness.. Masters of meditation know about this.. Suffice it to say: we're all operating within different levels of awareness constantly changing. When a body recognizes itself in the mirror, that's a very limited kind of awareness. When a soul recognizes itself, that's a kind of Awareness, the archetype of awareness. ^^ :) Okay :) No 'evidence' yet according to most's standards.. So I suggest all open-minded atheists explore this 'on their own' via meditation. That should be innocuous enough. ^^ Try to go into it without any preconceptions or expectations.. For religious people? Try fervent prayer on a daily basis.. Tho I highly recommend meditation to anyone..
^^ Just like a 'bad teacher' to preach a bunch of cliches then hand it all over to students for them to explore independently.. But we're not in kindergarden anymore – least.. I hope not.. ;) We can handle this assignment, right? ;)
..About physics, if we constantly employ Occam's Razor conscientiously, we find God is simpler and therefore preferable to multiverse, soul simpler and preferable to consciousness, and no model preferable to the Standard Model. ^^ Not especially comfortable vindicating religious dogma.. Wow, no wonder I focus on physics! ;) So allow me to pursue it a little..
Standard Model (core assumptions): all forces are mediated by virtual bosons: the weak, the strong, even mass!
No Model: forces could be mediated by anything: your mom's bra, peanut butter on a stick.. That's about equivalent to anyone declaring the weak 'force' is mediated by W or Z bosons or.. Mass is mediated by 'the Higgs'.. ^^ Clearly, no model has less and simpler (none!) assumptions than the SM has. So, by Occam's Razor, 'no model' wins! :P
Finding some transient particle associated with a set of decay chains does not imply that particle mediates those types of events! That's like saying a particular hot dog in an assembly line intentionally created the industry of hot-dog-making in order to create many copies of itself! Absurd! Or.. Like trying to understand the purpose of an engine by smashing large numbers of engines into each other. Absurd. Why don't we look within and ask the Designer why and how? ^^?
