Hillary Clinton and Marital Infidelity

A lot of people despised Bill Clinton for having sex with Monica Lewinski. Most of these people make much worse husbands than Bill Clinton made. The only person who stood to get hurt by his affair - Hillary Clinton - got a very good deal in the relationship. She was allowed her own mind, her own beliefs, her own political career and her own power. Whereas most of the men who hated Bill Clinton's philandering would never allow their wives any such thing.

Hillary Clinton had power in the Clinton administration, and she had power after the Clinton administration. Bill Clinton made his wife famous and powerful. So what that she had to deal with occasional infidelity. That's small potatoes when seen against the backdrop of what she was allowed to accomplish. She became the most powerful woman in the world, and Bill Clinton was the main reason for her becoming as powerful as she became. Without a brilliant and charismatic politician husband, would she have ever become this powerful? Most likely not.

While there are many women for whom marital infidelity by their husbands hurts more than does violence and oppression by their husbands, Hillary Clinton is obviously not such a person. As much as having one's husband sleeping around can be hurtful, it is nothing compared to living in domestic violence. When a woman is allowed real power, she has much more to be thankful for than does a woman stuck in a "traditional" marriage. The men who were howling for the head of Bill Clinton are, for the most part, oppressive toward their wives and would have never allowed their wives to become as powerful as Hillary Clinton became. Which means that Bill Clinton made a much better husband than these people would have ever hoped to be.

Ultimately private affairs concern the people who are a part of them, not national audience. And if Hillary Clinton - the only person who stood to get hurt by Bill Clinton having an affair - is not devastated by it, then everyone else should simply lay off. Hillary Clinton made her choices, and now she is reaping the rewards of them. That is her business and hers alone. And if she is not prosecuting her husband for his behavior, then nobody has any business doing so either.
