In a joint notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, Hitachi Koki coil nailers have been recalled due to the possibility of ejected nails posing an eye injury hazard.

About 65 000 Hitachi nail guns have been sold across the U.S. and Canada.  These nail guns are powered by electricity and use compressed air to "shoot" nails into wood, drywall or other hard materials.

Nails as long as three inches are wrapped into a coil that feeds nails one at a time, allowing nailing to be as swift as stapling paper together.  Most construction workers find a nail gun to be indispensable to their work.

The Hitachi Koki coil nailers in question occasionally eject the nails sideways at high speed.  This can cause catastrophic injuries.  In some cases the users have been partially blinded.

These Hitachis nail guns were produced until 2005 in Japan and sold throughout Canada and the U.S. at retail outlets until 2006.  Nail guns are quite expensive, so resale and purchasing of second-hand nailers may have extended the sale dates.

Contact Hitachi Koki U.S.A. who will repair the nail gun for free. Hitatchi U.S.A  800 706 7337.
