New Years 2009: Top Hangover Cures

While it is known that there is no 'cure' for a hangover, there are some remedies and homemade cures that you can do to stop your head from pounding and your tongue from feeling like it's growing its own cotton farm.

First let's bust some myths:

While there's no "cure" for a hangover, "Good Morning America" contributor Dr. Marie Savard busts some myths and offers tips on how to prevent that New Year's Day hangover.

Drinking coffee or other beverages like it will not make your headache go away, in fact it may actually contribute to your dehydration and interfere with your sleep, which you will need more of if you have a hangover.
Taking aspirin will not help prevent a hangover and can actually be really dangerous because it can cause gastritis and is also a blood thinner, making the alcohol travel through your system at a much more rapid pace.
Only taking pain medication the next morning with food will help you get rid of your hangover headache, and it's better to take them in the morning, not before going to bed.
Eating a big meal of grease filled food will not help you get rid of your hangover as it will just sit in your stomach and you could wake up feeling much worse.
If you eat it before drinking however, it will help your body not absorb as much alcohol, making a hangover less likely.
Beer is sometimes known as the best way to avoid a hangover, but that is really only because it fills you up so you are likely to drink less of it. Wine and champagne are deadly because they are more likely to cause hangovers and headaches.

Drinking more alcohol is not the way to get over a hangover; only sleep can do that.
If you drink juices it will help minimize the effects of a hangover as your body will be lacking in sugar and fluids.

So what about some hangover cures?
Well there are really only a few guaranteed ones, and none of them are quick.

1.    Drink lots of water, but avoid coffee (unless it is very weak) as the caffeine will continue to dehydrate your system.

 2.    Sleep is probably the best thing for you and your tired liver.  Lowering the shades so the room stays dark may help you stay asleep longer.

You can also eat some toast, have some orange juice or Gatorade, or even flat Ginger Ale, but some people like to go the more daring route (although these are not guaranteed cures!).
Daredevil drinkers like to begin the day with one of the classic pick-me-ups, a Bloody Mary or Bloody Caesar. They boost the drink with extra Tabasco to cut through the fog and jolt them awake, and a raw egg to nourish. A softer start calls for a glass or two of malty brown ale. Even better, try a cup of warm sake that caresses your insides. Beer and sake both provide vitamin B for your brain, carbohydrates for energy, and a little alcohol to anaesthetize.

It is also recommended to take a shower and get a bit of excercise.
In Ireland they used to bury the person with the hangover up to their neck in moist sand, but no one is too sure what that is supposed to do.

But most of all, don't drink too much in the first place. No one wants to start the New Year off feeling like they might die.

The Brazilian food can be very light and healty.

Rice and beans are a good start to build up tasteful but light meals. Just try to add some meat, a salad and a fresh juice (shown in the pic is the orange juice + acerola) to make a well balanced lunch.

THC works decently well for a hangover, better than anything else I have tried:  www.drinkthc.com
