Abbott Labs recalls Similac baby formula

The recall is being issued due to the fact that they may contain the presence of a 'small common beetle' and while the Food and Drug Administration has determined that the formula poses no immediate health threat, infants could experience some gastrointestinal discomfort and could lower their appetite due to this stomach pain.

To determine if you have a Similac product that could be affected by this recall, go to this Similac site and type in your Lot number. Affected products include those in plastic containers and those in sizes of 8-ounces, 12.4 ounces and 12.9 ounces.

(Similac has now posted all the lot numbers online.)

Customers can also call (800) 986-8850. (1-800-986-8850)

Products not involved include all Abbott Nutrition liquid ready-to-feed and concentrated infant formulas and all powder and liquid specialty formulas, including Similac Expert Care, Alimentum, Elecare, Similac Expert Care Neosure, Similac Human Milk Fortifier and metabolic formulas for inherited disorders.

The company is implementing a plan to address this matter in the affected manufacturing facility, which is expected to be completed shortly. No other facilities or products are involved in this recall.

If you have an affected product then you can call Abbott and return the product to them directly, not to the store where you purchased the product, at no cost to you.

Just dont feed your baby any similac advanced or similac sensative till you know. we just went out and bought a different brand of formula till we can find out. millians of cans are being recalled

Be careful, switching your baby to a totally different formula can also make your babies stomach upset. Just dont get confused thinking your baby is sick from the old formula because switching him/her to new formula can have the same affect.

I agree with this parent. My son is on Similac for gas and fussiness (Lactose Free) once I tried him on Similac Sensitive RS (Lactose Free) and he got sick and threw up everything he had consumed. So becareful when switching!

Problem is I can't even switch to a different brand. She has to be on NeoSure unless there is another formula for preemies but I would have to ask her dr. about that.

neosure IS NOT affected by this. my babyis on neosure as well, and i checked it out, that is not one of the affected fomulas

My baby is also on neosure and he has had an upset stomach for the last few days, has had diarrhea and has also been fussy. So, I'm wondering if they will add neosure ?

my son is also on Neosure. He has been fussy and diarreah since I opened this can of formula. It is not like him to spit up and to poop 2 days in a row. When he pooped the only way to clean him was to bathe him. I would keep an ear open, I am calling the pediatrician to see if there is anything else I can give him in the mean time. I am paranoid now. Even though Neosure was not recalled, I don't want to take chances, as a preemie if he gets sick he goes to the hospital, we just barely got him home from the NICU.

I would like to know why the recall website doesnt work and neither does their telephone number????

The website does work. Their servers are overloaded so it may take a while and many tries. I took me 5 times before their web server let me in....Abbot should be ashamed of itself! What happened to quality control? These are our kids!

The websites have been down and the phone has been unreachable for the past 3 hours!  How can we verify if our Similic formula is affected when Abbott can't even provide a working website??  I have now 6 containers of Similac and a hungry baby!!  No wonder my baby has been crying nonstop the past few nights, maybe it's this.  But, I'd like to verify this.

my child has PKU and cant have any breast milk.. only his medical formula AND 40 grams ( yes grams) of similac.... some people just CANT breast feed. im so sick of reading things that people are say " you should breast feed" or " breast milk has no bugs" SHUT UP ALREADY.. some of us have NO CHOICE

Amen!!  I am glad some people are able to breastfeed but some babies cannot tolerate it!!  Finally someone says exactly what I feel.  I am so tired of folks who can breastfeed lashing out at mothers who cannot or their babies cannot tolerate it!!

I couldn't agree more! I am a nurse and I breast feed and supplement with formula as I am a working mom.  This is not the time for people to be making rude and unnecessary comments regarding breastfeeding not having bugs in it.  This is a serious issue and these comments are not helpful or necessary.  We have a lot of preterm babies on formula that could be affected as well that for more than one reason are not able to receive breastmilk.  Thank you for saying this! I am ashamed of how people can treat eachother!

Courtvin, I'm with you. It's true -- some people have no choice and they should not be made to feel bad for having to use formula. There are all kinds of breastfeeding support groups while people that are unable to breastfeed are left to struggle on their own with looking the other way every time someone tells them "breast is best" or whatever else. It's ridiculous. We are all just trying to give our children a healthy, happy life.

Amen!  I am so sick of those who are able to breastfeed lashing out at those who cannot and have no choice!

"courtvin2010" I could not agree with you more. I have read similar comments on five different websites and I find it really insensitve!  I have twins that were preemies and I was only able to pump for them the first month as they were in the NICU for a time.  After that first month, I no longer had enough breastmilk for their required feed amounts.  I don't even understand why a person would write such a thing on a comment string specifically for parents who feed their babies the formula that may or may not be recalled!  Since they obviously do not have any reason for concern on this subject, they should really keep their opinions to themselves and be grateful they do not have the additional expense or safety concerns that parents of formula feed babies are FORCED to deal with!

PKU babies can breastfeed!!!!!!www.llli.org/NB/NBSepOct98p153.htmlit is very rare that a baby cannot truly breastfeed. less than 1% of all babies. imagine living in a country where there is no formula. orphaned babies are fed by other mothers. there are places like this in the world today. babies in these countries thrive and are healthy and attached. life without formula is possible!!and breastmilk is not only best, it's normal, natural and the healthiest possible choice. formula doesn't even come in as a close 2nd, 3rd, or 4th choice for babies.

Moonmama,As a breastfeeding mother, I think you are out of line.  To breastfeed or formula feed is not always a choice.  There are mothers that are not comfortable with breastfeeding, cannot produce enough supply to meet their child's demands, it is too painful, baby is not thriving, and the list goes on and on.  I have chosen to breastfeed, but I also supplement when necessary.  It is people like you who give breastfeeding mothers a bad reputation.  You should not condemn someone for not feeding a child from their breast.  The important part is that a mother is properly caring for their chid and making sure that child is nourished, by whatever form they choose.  We should be supporting one another as mothers and not buying into this "mom-vs-mom" or "breast vs bottle" battle society has fueled.  We are all moms (or parents, for all you dads) that love our children and want what is best for them.  That "best" is a personal opinion and prerogative.  Yours is not the only one out there.
