Abbott Labs recalls Similac baby formula

The recall is being issued due to the fact that they may contain the presence of a 'small common beetle' and while the Food and Drug Administration has determined that the formula poses no immediate health threat, infants could experience some gastrointestinal discomfort and could lower their appetite due to this stomach pain.

To determine if you have a Similac product that could be affected by this recall, go to this Similac site and type in your Lot number. Affected products include those in plastic containers and those in sizes of 8-ounces, 12.4 ounces and 12.9 ounces.

(Similac has now posted all the lot numbers online.)

Customers can also call (800) 986-8850. (1-800-986-8850)

Products not involved include all Abbott Nutrition liquid ready-to-feed and concentrated infant formulas and all powder and liquid specialty formulas, including Similac Expert Care, Alimentum, Elecare, Similac Expert Care Neosure, Similac Human Milk Fortifier and metabolic formulas for inherited disorders.

The company is implementing a plan to address this matter in the affected manufacturing facility, which is expected to be completed shortly. No other facilities or products are involved in this recall.

If you have an affected product then you can call Abbott and return the product to them directly, not to the store where you purchased the product, at no cost to you.

WOW!!! Soapbox. Does sound like you are trying to instill guilt. I do know that breastmilk is best and yes, even after 7 weeks, I feel horribly guilty not being able to provide my baby the best. As a matter of fact, I am a pediatric home health and hospice nurse, if we want to start throwing our weight around (earlier post of yours). I understand that you don't like formula, but to state it in a time of disarray like the present, just reminds some of us that we can't provide the best for our child. How many babies have you had that you couldn't breastfeed?

My baby threw a huge fit the other night and has never done so before and has been spitting up A LOT more the last couple days.. his stool is MUCH different than normal and I even got the chance to check his formula before the website went down and it said that his wasnt recalled.. Is it really accurate anyways??

My son was hospitalized for 4 days when he was just a few weeks old for fussiness, diarrhea, and severely excessive spit up. He was losing weight and marked as failure to thrive. My son had to have a barium swallow and the doctor said he does not have reflux. There was no known reason for him to be sick. They did many tests. We switched him to Alimentium and after about a week he finally started gaining and feeling better. He was on similac sensitive. It is very scary that we have to worry about things like bugs in our childrens milk. I have an unopened can of similac advance that we got from the hospital when he was born (june 2010) that is included in the recall. I can only imagine how many babies have had to suffer because of this!

I am very concerned and ticked off right now after hearing about this. I have trusted you guys since my daughter was born. For the last two weeks she has done nothing but fuss and refuse to eat. I am trying to call or look on the website for the lot numbers and I CANNOT get through to either. This is absolutely ridiculous and I couldnt express it more !!!!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone know if the lot number 90401T20 has been recalled? I think this is horrible that we can't check online and their phone number is busy of course. UnReal.

I really cant believe this, so wat are we all supposed to do? Just stop feeding our babies this formula, and switch to a different brand? This is bull crap!!!!!!

ok.when you call the 800 number you have to call and call over and over again back to back .. THEN you get listen to a recording and now, im currently on hold so how knows how long that will be. just call back to back to back.. i ALSO found a ladys number online who just works at SImilac and called her.. she was very suprised i found her number but i asked if something was wrong with the website, she just told me the volume is so high its messing up the website

With all the profits made over the years as we fed our infants thier formula, it seem SIMILAC & Abbot Labs  MIGHT establish an emergency plan and be able to staff a few more people to answer phones and maintain thier website so that we can find out if we are feeding our little ones thier tainted product. My grandaughter has had a reduced appitite for the past few weeks and all we want to know is IF this may a factor. I hope they find a way for us to get this information soon. For me, it is the corporate lack of concern and lack of response that creates distrust and frustration as a consumer...sometime worse than the original problem.

Does anyonne know if  88106t20 was on the recall list. My 4month old son had to be pciked up early from day care because of vomitting. He has to stay home for 24hrs before he can go back. I will let them know about the recall.

It doesnt look like the people who have issues with others not breast feeding are those that breast feed, it is the people that don't- obviously from this site. Why do you care what anyone thinks or says.? Do what you need to do for you and your own family. Calm down, relax. This is coming from someone that uses formula. And I think all of you are crazy.

AMEN!  Thanks for the comic relief.  Do what you feel is best for your child people! Damn these formula companies!

i have been trying for 2 hours to call or get on the website and its impossible!!! My daughter is 14 weeks and up until 8weeks she was solely breastfed, I started introducing formula 1 bottle a day and pumping and storing in preporation to return to work - 5 weeks ago i found out that I have too much Lipase and cannot store my milk, so for 3 feedings a day she has been getting Similac advanced i am on my 3rd can.  while i was on my second can my daughter was fussy, spitting up alot more thne usual and going to the bathroom alot more then normal - i hope it wasnt contaminated!

It is awful that this has happened. However, please remember, no one has died because of this and it was a voluntary recall...they didnt have to do it, so maybe, just maybe, everyone should get their heads out of their a## and be thankful that they did the recall, as it wasnt mandatory.  But, what am I saying, I am sure that most of you spend all your free time complaining on websites and blogs.

Kati101

Of course alot of us spend time complaining on line. I am a stay at home mom and have a med-school husband. I have no one to nag and complain all day, gotta vent somewhere. This make the perfect outlet right now! HAHA! That and the fact that some RNmom lady on this site is making my need for a healthy confrontation emerge.

Both my cans of Organic are bad--lot # 85483T2 and 92618T20 Our baby hasn't been sick at all so that must vary.  I do breastfeed and give her formula. This is such a bummer.  I hate having to worry about it and wonder if I should look into another brand.

I just got onto Similac's website and Lot 89239T20 has been recalled.  The websiter directs you to fill out a field to be reimbursed, but that site is not working.

Just got through on the web site.  Lot number 88115T21 has been recalled...

Does anyone know for sure if its just the similac formula?? My son has been getting fussier the last few days and throwing up more and seems to be screaming in pain like he's pushing gas for the last two days really bad. I don't know what else to do to help make it feel better and am calling the dr again in the morning.

If you google "Similac" and the code from your box, there is a good chance that someone on the web has posted if it has been recalled.  Give it a try!  That's how I found out one of my three cans has been recalled (and I found this thread, BTW).

Thank God none of mine were recalled! I was finally able to go online similac.com/recall/lookup.aspx and type in my numbers! after several tries. keep trying! Also try not to worry, if your baby is sick and fussy it is stressful enough, and there are many possibilities to what it may be. Babies are sensitive and go through tons of changes growing and adapting to the things of this world. Also, even though this is disturbing the possible contamination is not an extreme immediate threat, when you think about people eat bugs and are high in protein :D still not very settling but IT CAN BE WORSE! I hope everyones baby is not in serious conditions and my prayers go out to all the babies :]

these lot numbers of mine were also contaminated: 91479T20 and 82938T2 I am disgusted in the company and will not continue to use this product.  I plan to switch after discussing with my pediatrician.

I finally just got onto their site and I checked 6 different containers of formula and all of them have been recalled. IF YOUR USING POWDER FORMULA TAKE IT BACK!! get liquid or a different brand.  each one of our containers had a different so pretty much all lot numbers have been recalled.

I'm trying to go on their website to research my formula's lot #.  Wouldn't you know if but all of their links are down and their telephone # is busy.  How do I find out if his formula has been affected?  I've got 7 cans of powder in my possession of the Similac Sensitive Soy. Any suggestions?  In the past week, he's had two episodes where he was screaming hysterically and then stopped.  He's 9 months old and has always been a happy and pleasant baby with no screaming fits.  I thought it was gas.

Is lot number 90658RE6 a recalled one? We get WIC for our little one and Similac is the only formula that is allowed. Wish I could afford Enfamil, it smells better and doesn't stain as bad as Similac. I feel so bad for all the babies and the parents that are up with them, it is so hard when they can't tell you what hurts. My little one has been fussy for a few days but she is teething too.

We have WIC too and can't get anything new till the morning. Luckily I had extra formula from the hospital that is liquid. I have read many times on this site that the RE isn't contaminated. Good luck and hope times get better for you as well.
