Abbott Labs recalls Similac baby formula

The recall is being issued due to the fact that they may contain the presence of a 'small common beetle' and while the Food and Drug Administration has determined that the formula poses no immediate health threat, infants could experience some gastrointestinal discomfort and could lower their appetite due to this stomach pain.

To determine if you have a Similac product that could be affected by this recall, go to this Similac site and type in your Lot number. Affected products include those in plastic containers and those in sizes of 8-ounces, 12.4 ounces and 12.9 ounces.

(Similac has now posted all the lot numbers online.)

Customers can also call (800) 986-8850. (1-800-986-8850)

Products not involved include all Abbott Nutrition liquid ready-to-feed and concentrated infant formulas and all powder and liquid specialty formulas, including Similac Expert Care, Alimentum, Elecare, Similac Expert Care Neosure, Similac Human Milk Fortifier and metabolic formulas for inherited disorders.

The company is implementing a plan to address this matter in the affected manufacturing facility, which is expected to be completed shortly. No other facilities or products are involved in this recall.

If you have an affected product then you can call Abbott and return the product to them directly, not to the store where you purchased the product, at no cost to you.

this is crazy!!!! i wish us moms could know something asaP! MY lilttle girl has been sick for a few days and being ill.we need to know something else and everything says poses no serious health risk, but when your baby is in the hospital with ivs i think its pretty serious!!!!can anyone tell if they have heard anything useful?I wish i could of been able to keep breastfeediing but my body wouldnt allow me to produe anything else after a month.i tried all medications and home remadys.nothing worked so i put my daughter on similac and she has had stomach problems since.we have tried everything . now she has these new symptoms and i cant find out if her formula is infected and not all of us can afford to run out and buy more.i really hope and pray any baby that has it are ok and those that dont have it stay that way.As for the bragging breast feeding mom you should be ashamed out here throwing that up in others faces because babies are sick and what ever the reason they are not breast fed,it isnt their fault and im glad you breastfeed but please this is not the time i promise you.there is alot of angry moms. If anyoene finds anything out please post.im gonna keep tryin the website and number

i think is very childish how this mothers here are fighting about whats better formula or breast feedings.we are supposed to be worried about our kids and not about whos feeding their babies what.if it's either formula or breast feeding our kids are getting well taking care of and are getting feed...All i want to know is if my baby's milk is infected or not web site or phone is not working

I myself was unable to breastfeed due to my low supply of milk. Just because you breastfeed, doesn't make you any better than any other Mother out here. The most important thing is that the baby gets fed. It is impossible to check my lot number - I've had to reload the recall site for over 20 minutes. GRRRRRR

This is absolutely disgusting and disturbing my 5 month old son has been very fussy and uncomfortable for about a week now he recently even stopped sleeping through the night! Now what am I supposed to do I just bought 3 huge containers of formula that equals to damn near 80 dollars! Also how the hell do they know it doesn't post any major health threats ...has anyone ever ingested these beetles ? are there studies on these beetles ? or there effects on humans? We as parents want the absolute best for our children and this is what a formula company does....not on purpose but still babies bodies are fragile the smallest things can damage them. Could this increase the risk of SIDs? I have so many concerns and anger!

I've read where all T20s are recalled.  I have 3 big tubs myself! I haven't been able to verify, but reading it online is enough for me.

i so angry right now i just put my son on this formula last week cause my breast milk is going away and now i find out my son is drinking bug parts! if i wanted to feed him bugs i would grid up my self...last time i checked i wasnt a bird!!!!!!!!!

1
Not too late for you

Maria, if you just started formula last week and are still partially breastfeeding, it may not be too late to build up to a full breastmilk supply. Find an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant in your area and get help with breastfeeding. Milk production is based on milk removal, so nursing your baby more often should help, as well as other strategies that a trained breastfeeding specialist can help you with. Many ideas are at www.lowmilksupply.org. Best of luck.

A little annoyed.

Just got off the phone with my local Walmart, since I couldn't get any information from Similac!... My Walmart has taken ALL of the Similac powders off the shelves.  ALL of  it.  The customer service lady told me that they were told that ALL of the powders are contaminated.  Different than what I've read Similac is saying, but oh well... Walmart is taking back all Similac powders for merchandise credit, unless you still have a receipt in which case you would get cash.

My son is on Neosure, and i checked it out, it has NOT been recalled. i would just like to say to all of the mothers who are fighting, about what is best for your child. We are all smart, and we all would like to do what is best for our child. MY son was 32 weeks when he was born, he was in the nicu for a little over a month. I was told that breast is best, which i already knew, and i already planned on breastfeeding. Due to the fact that he was in the NICU i could not produce enough mile for his feedings. The doctor told me that Neosure was the second best thing compared to breast milk. so to all of you ignorant mothers who think that there is only one choice, sorry, but there isn't. All of the mothers who are on this website trying to find out what has or has not been recalled, please pay no attention to these women. They are not trying to help, only be rude and ignorant when you ladies are trying to get help. I pray that all of your babies come out of this without any problems. i wish you and your children did not have to go through this

I just got word from a friend who got through and if your can has T2 in the lot number or RB then it IS included in the recall!

Pearl Madrid

87831rb6 has been recalled as well, and I heard from another posting that all cans with rb and plastics t2 are more then likely to be recalled. But check anyway.

I took the advice of a previous poster and just Googled "Similac (lot number)"... I have read (not been able to verify with Abbott) that all T20 lots are RECALLED and RE's are not.  Google your lot number.  I have 3 two pound plastic tube (all T20s) that are bad and 2 cans of RE that are ok.  Although I wish I could verify that through the damn company! AH!  I just happen to have bottle of ready to feed here today, so I'll be using that until I can get to the store tomorrow. I'm going to love driving to two different stores to return all the formula (the tubs were bought from Sams club). ugh!  Good luck everyone.  I'd just switch to the liquid and return all powder.  You would think the company could just post what lots are recalled instead of making 40 million people call in.  Can you imagine being an employee of that company right now? Insane! Way to go PR people at Abbott.

Just got through on the phone 89233T20 and 91485T20 have been recalled.

sinem matt

we can all only check the current containers.  my son has been on similac for 5 months.  even if the current one i have is not contaminated, i have no idea if the previous ones were.  for me the bigger questions are:- how far back does the recall go? should we be concerned about contamination 3 months ago?- what percentage of the recall do they think is actually contaminated?- what type of symptoms should the babies show?- and if they do not show any symptoms, can they still be affected and what should parents do about it?  How is it possible that a drug company can get away with selling contaminated baby product and does not offer answers to these questions. How is it possible that  FDA says "nothing to worry about when we have been feeding our kids larva?!?

I could only breastfeed my baby for 3 weeks and I dried up! Please do not judge people who formula feed their children. Just because u were blessed to be able to breast feed ur children doesnt mean that the rest of us are bad parents. If anything we r good parents for getting freaked out over the recall, because we had no choice but to give our children formula. This is not the time to be bickering over who is the better parents. Our childrens well beings are at stake here and frankly it makes me sick that people who breast feed would rub that in the faces of people who can't at a time like this!!! BTW The Similac R.S. for less spit up:76998T2 is safe

I finally got the website to work and found out that our can is on the re-call. It is Similac Sensitive  89231T20.It makes me sick to think of the large bottle our baby drank, just this evening. She will be on juice and baby food until this is fixed.

870399V00, 880809V00 and 821759V00 are NOT recalled according the the website.  These are soy.  Just keep trying to refresh/reload the website and it will eventually come up.  And to you high and mighty, uppity, rude "Breast Feeding is the ONLY Option" moms on here, I have one of those 'Less than 1%' babies that cannot have breast milk.  Believe me, I tried.  I have a chest freezer full of frozen breast milk but after MUCH testing, my daughter cannot have breast milk.  We actually just started to switch to Similac from Neocate.  If you don't know anything about it, it's for babies with severe feeding issues.  So please stop acting like we are purposely hurting or neglecting our babies because we formula feed them.  Sometimes, it's just not an option.  Now that you're done reading this, go back to hugging your tree.  Thanks =)

90681RE6 not recalled. @ Jeff- do you really think that posting that information is helpful? I am an upset parent too, but come on! I doubt that these individuals could have stopped this from happening. What do you do for a living? I'm sure there is something I could have a right to complain about and post your info. Obviously there are some really upset people on this website that can do some crazy stuff right now and you posting personal info is totally irresponsible. Don't you think some of them have kids too. You place them at risk as well. I am thankful that Similac took it upon themselves to recall this, eventhought they didn't have to.
