Infant Formula Recall 2010: Similac Recall From Abbott Labs
Infant Formula Similac Powder Has Been Recalled By Abbott Laboratories
Abbott has issued a voluntary recall of about five million Similac-brand powder infant formulas that were sold in the United States, Guam, Puerto Rico and some Caribbean countries.
The recall is being issued due to the fact that they may contain the presence of a 'small common beetle' and while the Food and Drug Administration has determined that the formula poses no immediate health threat, infants could experience some gastrointestinal discomfort and could lower their appetite due to this stomach pain.
To determine if you have a Similac product that could be affected by this recall, go to this Similac site and type in your Lot number. Affected products include those in plastic containers and those in sizes of 8-ounces, 12.4 ounces and 12.9 ounces.
(Similac has now posted all the lot numbers online.)
Customers can also call (800) 986-8850. (1-800-986-8850)
Products not involved include all Abbott Nutrition liquid ready-to-feed and concentrated infant formulas and all powder and liquid specialty formulas, including Similac Expert Care, Alimentum, Elecare, Similac Expert Care Neosure, Similac Human Milk Fortifier and metabolic formulas for inherited disorders.
The company is implementing a plan to address this matter in the affected manufacturing facility, which is expected to be completed shortly. No other facilities or products are involved in this recall.
If you have an affected product then you can call Abbott and return the product to them directly, not to the store where you purchased the product, at no cost to you.

My daughter has been very fussy lately. She WAS drinking similac formula that has been recalled. We thought it was just her teething. She is 6 months old. We have changed from the Similac, and she has not been fussy all day, and I will NEVER again buy a product from them.

my daughter has been sick for the last few weeks...took her to the doctor this week and they thought it was just the flu ...i asked them about this and they said that all of the bottles have been removed, yet i have the bottles sitting in front of me. my doctor is obviously a quack and has no clue what she is doingi am now moving over to enfamil off of the similac sensitive rs formula (ID 85261T2)abbott and similac should be held liable for this. its not adults who suffered , its small infants who may just experience GI problems for their lives to come. i am going to a lawyer this week to find out what is going on

Mom's milk is never recalled. I know there will always be a tiny percentage of women who do not produce enough: insufficient glandular tissue, PCOS (some make tons of milk!), breast reductions (some make plenty of milk!), etc. But most women can nurse and or provide their own milk to their baby. It is the perfect milk to make that baby's brain and body/immune system develop exactly as it was intended to develop. I hope mom's will get more help from an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant (ILCA.org) in the future so they don't have to worry about this catastrophic incident ever again. My granddaughter is being nursed and I am so happy we are not worrying about this recall. The companies should be ashamed that such things happen. The women who have no choice shouldn't have to worry about their babies having such ill effects from a product they boost is so good. This isn't the first and unfortunately it probably won't be the last.

can please somebody from abbott laboratories here in the Phils. enlighten us parents on this issue. I have a 4 month old baby girl & her milk since birth is similac advance. I read the breaking news stated that part of US, puerto rico, guam & carribean countries are affected. the fact that the said milk is not cheap, i guess the company itself owes an explanation if we're affected here in the Philippines.

I also have a 6 month old that we have been slowly transferring to formula and am very disgusted with abbott since their formula was what we started her on. However something you should realize with the system is that yes they are doing a voluntary recall. It is just that voluntary. The FDA isn't involved with the recall so therefore they don't have to make any real big effort to recall it and get it back. They can also still sell it cause the FDA says it isn't life threatening. Now if it was life threatening then the recall would be wide spread and pulled from the shelfs very quickly. I know that when your child is in pain and you can't comfort them and don't know what is causing it that it is the worst feeling in the world. And in my opinion if it makes a infant sick and puts some in the hospital then it is just as bad as being life threatening and should be handle the same way. But the system is flawed and as a consumer you have to do the research and work for recalls. Goes for anything, cribs, carseats and everything!!!!! If it is recalled for any reason it should be pulled immediately and blocked from sales. Stores can prevent you from buying alcohol before it's legal to buy it why can't they do the same thing with recalled items. It generally all comes from there home office so local stores that are slow at pulling it off the shelves would be unable to ring it up. I hope all whos kids had very adverse reactions have a speed recovery and this never happens again. I am lucky cause as I said we were just starting to switch my daughter and she was only getting about 4 ounces a day mixed with breastmilk!!!! So the only affect we had was she didn't eat well. She wasn't interested. And when I think about it the days that I missed mixing the formula with breastmilk she ate great.

my two month and a half old baby girl is always spitting up her food and eating less than usual. So when i heard of this "RECALL" i totally thought it must definatley have something to do with her behavior.Any how, after doing a little more investigating, i had found out some formula was not contaminated. My only concern is if they say its not contaminated can it still be?

My daughter has been on Similac Soy poweder for months until a couple weeks ago we switched to Enfamil Soy because she was so gassy and screaming in pain for months and had a bout of diarrhea for 3 weeks and the doctor couldnt figure out what it was because she had no fever and all her stools were negative. So my husband gets a call from Sams Club today telling him that we have been buying the formula from the contaminated Lots that have been recalled from their stores so we should stop using and return them. Hello-they actually picked up the phone and called my husband-there is no doubt our formula was tainted. My infant was so perfect the first 3 weeks of life never cried or anything and then when we started on the Similac it was like colic screaming baby. she would scream for hours on end and was in so much pain you could hear her gas sounded like an adult. It really hurts me to know that if I would have choosen Infamil from the get go my daughter probably wouldnt have been in pain for several months. Really upset never buying Similac again!!

I just wanted to say that as soon as something is recalled the walmart system will not allow it to be sold at any register. There is no way to over ride this process. I know first hand, I am a manager. As for product being on the shelf... there should be nothing left on the shelf once the recall is issued. There is a 24hr window to remove the product once this recall is issued. However as stated above as soon as the recall is issued you would not be able to purchase the product (the important part of the recall process). Also make sure that the product on the shelf was not the un-effected product. There is only a few products that are on recall. I am sorry for all of the problems everyone is having with this recall. It sucks that we have to go through these things. Someone needs to be held accountable for our saftey just a little bit more.

well, at first i get similac ( that the recall can) for my baby boy, he was sick then i took him to the doctor and they give me enfamil with iron for my baby to eat... thats formula is good for him and he has no problem. but if you are in the WIC Program in Minnesota, they won't provide you with enfamil.

I had always pictured in my mind a factory that produces baby formula being the cleanest and safest around. It is disgusting and more importantly dangerous to offer tainted beetle part or larvae formula to infants. My daughter is 13 months and has been experiencing diarrhea since her last two similac cans of Lot # 90375T20. As a result she is crying hysterically periodically at night and developed a diaper rash we cant seem to clear up due to constant cleaning. At least they did a recall seeing that the FDA doesnt seem to find any immediate risks. I want to see their inspectors give this formula to their infants. I doubt they would. I hope their are no severe cases caused from this incident. Thank you yahoo news because they informed me. Btw krogers, publix, and costco were also slow on receiving the recall notice as was I. Not just Walmart.

I am glad I do not feed my baby Similac but not because of the recall. I am glad because this formula is the choice of people (some - not all) who can't put together an intelligent sentence. This even has spell check!

My daughter is ten weeks old. I stopped breastfeeding when she was three weeks old and went to Similac Advance Formula due to Jaundice. After about a week or so, she started having a lot of discomfort internally. I could touch her tummy and she was ok but she was pretty upset a lot. It rapidly became and issue where I thought she was constipated or backed up because her bowels were water. It got verybad so I took her to the emergency room where they did an ultrasound and found that her whole stomach and intestines were full of air, so it was blocking the view of telling whether or not she has a blockage. They senther home saying there was no blockage and the next morning, they called and said the radiologist said she in fact mayhave one to take her to the childrens hospital ER. So, two hours later we are at the ER, she is screaming and has a temp, had Xrays and found the same thing. So, the doctor sent her home diagnosed with DIARHEA. We changed her formula to Similac Sensitive and she still had the issue. I do not know if it was due to the fact of already being an issue and it hadnt cleared out yet, but I took ker to her pediatrician who ordered a Sonogram and found the air also and could not see much else.. As soon as they did the recall of course I paniced because immediately I realized that is what was wrong!! So, we went thorugh weeks of this and I now have her on Carnation good start. She has regular bowel movements and eats plenty. She got to a point where she was only eating MAYBE one to two ounces every TWELVE HOURS!!! I am very upset about this and I feel so badly for my daughter. She still is uncomfortable but I think and hope overthe nextfew days it will pass. She is already showing signs of improvement since the formula switch.

Please do not believe Bella Lulu. Abbott is a very responsible company and not all lots are affected, nor any of their liquid formula or ALIMENTUM, SENSITIVE, NEOSURE formulas. Beetles are in anything you eat, even in offices, cars, grocery stores.. so please, do not panic!!

I got my baby's Similac Advance from Costco. The lot number mentioned as NOT RECALLS on Abbott (Similac) web site (when I searched by Lot Number last week). But my husband told me that in Costco web site - all Similac are recalls. My daughter has had 102 fever, crying, coughing, throwing up. We finally switched to Enfamil (she seems to eat okay and doing better so far with Enfamil). And we have also given our daughter Pedialyte to rehydrate her as well.I hope everyone's babies are okay and feel better soon.

I'm really upset regarding this, I have 11month old twin boys and lately they have been crying way more than normal, I took them to the doctor to check for ear infections or something, but they were all clear. I'm really upset to know this was most likely their formula caused their stomachs to hurt.

I am completely disgusted with this company for nor getting the recalls out sooner. I can not believe that our infants have to suffer so needlessly for their lack of quality control within their company. As far as walmart goes from what i have read, they are ridiculous ,and not giving refunds when people are going in to return tainted cans of formula is just plain old greed and verrrrrry bad business ethics. I have read far too many complaints about how walmart handled this recall and sounds like they did not take it seriously . Also what about the hospiltals or clinics these babies were brought in to???did they not notice a problem or a pattern of the same symtoms. I get that alot of the symptoms are similar to colic and might have been hard to figure out initially but do i understand there are beetles in the cans??are they microscopic and unnoticable or can they be seen in the cans crawling around.I used similac concentrate never powders with my two boys 21 years ago...right from the hospital...it was touted as the best one out there back then...funny though with my second son, 4 yrs later...i used the similac formula sometimes powder and he was sooooo sick all of the time projectile vomiting and it was soooo scary....i had to switch him to isomil at the time soy based ..but if he had a milk sensitivity or allergy of some sort..why was i able to switch him to another milk based brand a month later...couldnt afford isomil too xpensive at the time..so i just tried a different brand and strangely he was fine from then on..hmmmm...kinda makes you wonder if this issue happens more often than not is it colic or contamination???most people would not put their babies through such extensive testing as such..unless it was to a point where the baby was clearly very ill... I will not shop at walmart anymore in light of these return complaints....and I have seen then take back a verrry wellll used pair of shoes..i will admit i was surprised..but i thought that was their policy..if your not satisfied they will refund...

I dont get it...so they say the beetles are not life threatening but with the gastro issues and the vomiting and diarrea that is being noted......i dont know but to me dehydration of an infant can be verrry life threatening...especially if this was going on through the heatwave of a summer we just had...compounds it all....i know i had to rescue my 3 mnth old grandaughter on few occaisions due to the worry of not eating properly and the heat we had here in the south....and just young mothers 16 or 17...wouldnt really know these things or even be bothered to want to know about.........sad....and pathetic....innocent babies are suffering here what is it that abbot doesnt get....do any of their employess have children....makes you wonder..

I am a grandmother of a now 3 month old and would like to just warn a mom who might think about using Walmart's Parents Choice formula instead of a brand formula. (With the Similac recall now.)
My daughter was given Enfamil at the hospital for the baby. My daughter breastfed and only used the formula as a supplement. She bought the Walmart brand because the ingredients were the same as Enfamil. My daughter was ill one weekend and the baby was put on the bottle, within days she was crying, my daughter thought it was her breastmilk causing it, since she was having a GERD episode. So she switched the baby over completely to Parents Choice for Enfamil.
After a couple of weeks, there were problems similar to colic, so she changed to the Gentle formula. She still had problems so went to the soy formula.
After being gassed, constipated and just screaming in the evening hours she was taken to her baby doctor who told her that the Parents Choice may include the same ingredients, but their prebiotics are not the same quality!! They have found that it causes constipation and tummy trouble in many babies. My grandbaby was put back on Enfamil, within in days she was better!!
Just wanted to mention this so that if you decide to try Parents Choice for Similac you may want to discuss this with your baby's doctor, to see if the formulas are truly the same.
Best Wishes to the little ones who have been sickened by the lack of care shown by the company's manufacturer.

ENFAMIL GENTLEASE may be causing the exact same problems for my 4 month old. My husband and I had observed a noticable difference in her appetite, # of wet diapers, some diahrea (along with constipation too, oddly enough), major spitting up/throwing up, and getting up every hour of the night crying. I asked the doctor about it and she said that babies go through different phases and she may have a touch of a virus. She does not attend daycare and has not been around anyone that I know of who may have been sick. I am just wondering if this is just a major coincidence or if there could be some connection with the Similac recall. I just want to be clear that all of these symptoms began occurring before the recall was announced. Just want to throw it out there and see if anyone else using GENTLEASE has noticed these symptoms recently.

I have a 7 month old son who was using similac since birth. Just last month he went in for his 6 week check up, my son was under weight, and i told the doctor he had diarrhea for 1 week (at that time). We associated the diarrhea with teething since he just got two teeth in. a few days later similac recalled their formula. My son has now had diarrhea for one month and is still under weight. My doctor has collected stool samples and I am waiting for the results to see what is going on. The weird thing about the diarrhea is that recently is was black like the black stool the newborns have and it smelled fishy. I am very concerned I have already returned all similac formuala that I had and switched to enfamil. I will never return to similac and If my son's results do show that he has been sick as a result of the bad formula, I hope similac has a better response for me then a apology and my money back. It was very difficult to understand my son's sickness, since at that time he was teething and had a cold. Now he is all clear of the cold and has no teeth breaking in. The only issue that continues is diarrhea. (1 month now).
