January Think Thyroid Month in India to Eradicate Next Diabetes
The incidence of thyroid disease is growing all over the world, lack of iodine, too much fluoride whatever the cause, it can affect anyone, famous celebrities like Oprah and thousands of people that go unaware of their condition due to the poverty situation in their countries. India's effort can change the lives of those who can be diagnosed to receive proper treatment.
As an effort to eradicate the 'next diabetes', the Indian Thyroid Society has declared the month of January as 'Think Thyroid Month' and aims to conduct over 70-80 thousand tests during this period.
"The idea behind the organising of these tests in camps is to spread awareness about the thyroid-related disorders," says Dr Unnikrishnan of the Indian Thyroid Society.
"What makes the thyroid disorders more dangerous is that many patients remain unaware of it until its a bit too late, making it most under-diagnosed of all disorders, he adds.
In February 2007, at the age of 53, Winfrey began to experience health concerns. Her legs were swelling while her weight and blood pressure were creeping up. She was diagnosed with a thyroid condition — hyperthyroidism that morphed into hypothyroidism — and she stopped exercising.
