Anyone know what Japan's average work week is?  There's 24 hours in a day ... hmm ...

Japan has one of the lowest birth rates in the world, thanks, health experts say, to an overworked populace too tired to have much sex. Surveys show that married Japanese couples under 50 have sex an average of 45 times a year, less than half the global average. Now some groups are calling on employers to give workers more time off to procreate, lest Japan face a huge population shortage, the Guardian reports.

"It’s a question of work-life balance,” said the head of the Japan Family Planning Association. “The people who run companies need to do something about it.”

I do have some serious doubts about this though. Those that work over time are with Factories such as Toyota, The Bureaucrats here do not suffer from over time work though. The Land population works 60 hours week and has the highest fertility in the country as well. The cities suffer from an no children low, and since they make up 80% of the population being in cities, this is a disaster of sorts. However they have no children not because of a lack of time or sex, rather because of a lack of room and money, 20 scare meter of living space for a married couple at 800 Euro rent per month does not allow you to have children. There is nothing wrong with working hard, what may be the main problem here is living space and the rent being way to high. You may want to look at the number of abortions and contraceptives sold as well in order to get a balanced picture. THe reduction in working hours is due to the economic crisis and the increase of unemployment more so then because of lack of children, that is a problem as well though, yet one that can only be resolved with affordable living space and food since good food like fruits and meat are very expensive in Japan.

Thanks for the insight Paschen. Hong Kong is quite cramped as well - and I can understand how the space would really hamper the growth of families...
