Jett Travolta: Victim of Autism, Kawasaki, or Scientology?
Read the latest updates - Jett Travolta Autopsy Report: Seizure Diagnosis 'Premature'
The tragic death of Jett Travolta has brought up some sensitive issues surrounding his health condition and the possible (and perhaps preventable) reasons that may have attributed to his untimely passing.
Both Kelly Preston and John Travolta maintained that Jett, who was 16 when he died, suffered from Kawasaki Disease, which typically affects young children (under 5). There is some suspicion that there is an immunological cause to Kawasaki disease, though this theory has not been proven. Left untreated, the disease can lead to serious heart complications due to an inflammation of blood vessels - and often death due to heart attack.
Kawasaki disease is a treatable disease, and the most effective course is intravenous immunoglobulin, a blood transfusion that is rich in antibodies. If treatment is sought, death due to complications is extremely unlikely:
With early treatment, rapid recovery from the acute symptoms can be expected and the risk of coronary artery aneurysms greatly reduced. Untreated, the acute symptoms of Kawasaki disease are self-limited (i.e. the patient will recover eventually), but the risk of coronary artery involvement is much greater. Overall, about 2% of patients die from complications of coronary vasculitis. Patients who have had Kawasaki disease should have an echocardiogram initially every few weeks, and then every 1–2 years to screen for progression of cardiac involvement. It is also not uncommon that a relapse of symptoms may occur soon after initial treatment with IVIG. This usually requires re-hospitalization and retreatment. Treatment with IVIG can cause allergic and non-allergic acute reactions, aseptic meningitis, fluid overload and, rarely, other serious reactions. Aspirin may increase the risk of bleeding from other causes and may be associated with Reye's syndrome. Overall, life-threatening complications resulting from therapy for Kawasaki disease are exceedingly rare, especially compared with the risk of non-treatment.
So what happened to Jett? Reports indicate he hit his head on a bathtub, but it is unclear whether he was having a seizure at the time, or if he slipped, or if something else preceded his fall. Was this a complication of his bout with Kawasaki disease? Or autism?
Many people suspected that Jett was autistic (videos which were once available online that 'clearly' demonstrate Jett's developmental disability can no longer be found), but Travolta and Preston are prominent Scientologists and autism is not recognized by the cult religion:
In the past there have been reports that Jett was autistic, but Travolta always denied it, saying instead that his son suffered from Kawasaki Syndrome, a disease characterized by high fever, skin rash and swelling of the lymph nodes. Travolta follows Scientology, which does not recognize autism.
One of the tenets of Scientology is that mental illness is psychosomatic, and can only be treated through spiritual healing. You may remember Tom Cruise earning significant flak for statements to Matt Lauer concerning mental illness, namely his remark that psychiatry is a pseudo-science. Because of this fundamental belief on behalf of Scientologists, Jett certainly wasn't treated for autism, and was likely not appropriately treated for Kawasaki disease either (especially if his condition was misdiagnosed, as many people suspect it was).
Last year, one website wrote an eerily prophetic post concerning this event:
Four years ago, Kelly got out her hounds-tooth coat and pipe and giant magnifying glass and used her sleuthiness to determine that the cause was environmental toxins. Specifically, carpet cleaning chemicals. Then Kelly used a Scientology endorsed program created by L. Ron Hubbard to cure him. And it worked! No, wait, did I say, "it worked"? I meant to say, "it failed completely!"The real problem of course isn’t carpet based treachery, it's that Jett has autism, and no amount of meadow-scented deception is behind it. He's never been officially diagnosed of course, since the "church" won't allow it, but outsiders who know the affliction well say the signs are clearly evident.I say we give the Scientology method a few more years to kick in. Soon, Jett will be dead. Ta-da!
Critics of Scientology have been crying 'child abuse' for years in respect to the Travolta's disregard for autism and their unwillingness to address Jett's needs.
Folks picketed the Travolta/Preston family, saying that their refusal to seek treatment for the boy bordered on—or, you know, flat out was—child abuse. Travolta's brother Joey even produced a movie about the condition, but the family continued to shut down any reports that autism was involved.
Neighbours of the Travolta's, who also happen to be parents of an autistic child, had nothing short of shocking stories to tell with regard to Jett and how he was treated within the family:
The Kennys also claim that Kelly and John "let Jett sit in front of video games all day eating junk food, while they eat the best organic food money can buy. They exclude Jett from all social events because they are embarrassed.""Once," reports Kenny, "when Kelly took him to the movies, Jett started to have a meltdown and Kelly pointed at the nanny and ordered, 'Take care of it.'"
"Jett does not speak at all," confirms Kenny. "He has not even been taught how to communicate. We struggle every week to pay for our daughter's therapy. How dare he [Travolta] ruin his own son's chances of recovering! We want to get the word out on this."

It makes me so sad that people who are obviously intelligent and are not living in the "back woods" couldn't draw the line between religious belief and the safety/well being of their son. Jett was often shown wearing headphones, autistic children often suffer from a sensitivity to noise and find comfort in listening to certain types of music. It soothes them in situations they would normal find distressing, for example the paparazzi. It is beyond me to come right out and say he was autistic, I am no practitioner of psychology. However as a mother of a child with a learning disorder and an aunt of a child with autism, Jett Travolta clearly had more going on than Kawasaki's and a seizure disorder. The Travoltas are on record saying that they WERE treating him for the seizure, but the medication "wasn't helping" so they stopped it.
When I first heard about Jett's death, I was shocked and saddened and unfortunately I will admit I immediatly thought "I wonder if this is due to Scientology's disbelief in mental illness". The autopsy was performed in the Bahamas, then quickly cremated. Noone will ever truly know and you can be assured that this famous white family will never garner any negative attention publicly and those who attempt to hold them responsible will be touted as cruel. I wonder how they'll sleep at night...

There are many other seizure medications the Travoltas could tried in place of the one that stopped working. Stopping the medication set up the increase of seizures and the potentially fatal seizure.
And how convenient that Jett died in the Bahamas, land of accidental deaths. The autopsy was rushed and incomplete; "seizure" by itself is rarely a cause of death; only a long process of elimination would have given meaningful results. A real autopsy could have also determined how long Jett was in the bathroom before he was found, which by first accounts was 12 hours. How could that have happened if Jett had 24-hour care as Travolta claimed?at 22:00 on January 6th, 2009
I remember years ago the rumors that Jett was autistic ~ but never realized the connection to Scientology. I knew the Travolta's were Scientologists, but never made the connection until now. It is sad when any parent loses a child.
But how dare anyone presume to judge them for actions that cannot be verified?
Believe it or not, I think it's criminal not a treat a child for a disease or condition when help is available. That having been said, there is no way for any of us to know whether or not Jett would have responded to conventional, or even unconventional, treatment. As much as it can help, I've also seen parents break themselves to get better treatment for their children when what they need to do is accept the limitations that nature has placed upon their children.
And so what if Kelly once snapped at the nanny?? Isn't it part of the nanny's job to deal with it? And has no one here ever snapped at someone close to them in a way that doesn't seem bitchy, snotty or imperious?
And so what if they are in denial. We all live in one state of denial or another about something. And I appreciate that Travolta could be a positive force IF Jett was autistic and IF they recognized it. We all know that in our culture celebrity has power. but it is their power to wield should they choose to. They are under no obligation to do anything to benefit anybody but themselves. Does everybody reading this do everything in their power to enrich the lives of others - do you volunteer, donate blood, food and clothing to local causes and charities that need your help. All things being equal, do we do as much in our lives for others as we often expect celebrities to.
Glass houses folks. Glass houses.

I have had seizures for 40+ years and have worked with disabled children. Like many say there is no cure for autism HOWEVER if John Travolta had kept him on the depokote it may have controlled the seizures. It is one of the primary drugs used for grand mal seizures. But without any type of medical treatment the kid didn't stand a chance. There is no reason why he shouldn't have had access to CAT scans, PET scans, MRI's, EEG's ,blood work and a whole list of other stuff. Anyone who has had a child or has gone through it themselves and listened to his interview had to have some doubt whether he was "there for his kid". Love is about SACRIFICE. Was he at home with his son caring for him? Baby monitors and nannies? Whatever happen to unconditional love. Pride? You cannot serve two gods.

>Glass houses folks. Glass houses.
Might be your glass house, it's not mine nor the vast majority of people. I would never in a million years not treat or provide supportive services if I had an autistic child, nor not give medication if he had “one extremely serious seizure a week”, setting him up for an increase of seizures and a fatal seizure. Not would 99%+ of people. This is abuse in the extreme and possibly something much worse.

Hello to all..I'm S.Florida mom to 2 youngest sons both having Autistic dxs...The just-turned-twenty Michael is moderate to severe, also has serious seizure d/o that began July 3,2000. Our youngest son is dx Asperger Syndrome, but above avg.IQ,no seizures, just no filter between thoughts/mouth, lotta OCDS, some tics. The tragic days the Travolta family are enduring are unspeakably hellish, whatever their 'religion', or differences thereof. It's taken me a few days just to be able to listen to the story, as except for the death of their precious angel Jett, the EXACT same scenario happened to Michael and us about 4:15 pm,rainy Sat.afternoon of July 12'08. Michael went into the bth/rm to undress/potty/ get ready for shower before supper n bed. Luckily, I was only following a few steps behind our son when we heard a boom n the house shook...has had his seizures 'morph'into particularly heinous 'drop'seizures, NO warning(and I know every blink, eyelash, everything about this boy) of any kind, and hit his head/face on the bthrm wall, towel rack, and I believe the covered catbox, high domed plastic lid,on the way down which likely kept him from having his nose crushed up into his skull before finally face/head hitting floor tile. Unreal !! Not my 'first day at the rodeo', but horrifying nevertheless..major S.Fla.medical center ICU for coupla wks, 2 reparative plastic/dental surgeries, after the first surgery 2 repair/rebuild everything from mouth/cheeks down, went into a 3.5 HOUR Tachycardia in Recovery, outta the blue, hrs of trying later, finally found a med.that had 2 stop, then restart(thank God!)his heart....this was while he was on three seizure rxs alone! Later we learned that one of the rxs was actually making his condition much worse...Months later, still in n outta major hospitals, tests, studies, only on one new seizure rx, and working so far:)....came wayyy too close to losing our angel...I'm sure they loved/love him still more than life itself, and while I find it shameful that their beliefs don't permit them to acknowledge or even say the 'A'word(Autism)..I'll put my neck on the line and risk blatant rudeness by saying that Jett was indeed Autistic...guess the word doesn't really matter, call it a crayon, umbrella, cookie, whatever...I'd bet my life on it-'We' know each other immediately when we see'one of our own'out in the world. Most importantly, it's evident they adore n love him and gave him the best life ever, whether they ever put a name to it or not...All of the zillions(sadly, our numbers are huge)of Autistic kids have a beauty/glow/look unlike the 'mugs'on the rest of us so-called 'normal'folks...Meds do work, some o them some of the time, all o the time, or not at all...and they can and DO suddenly stop working, w/no warning too. It's not a 'mental illness',the way most o the world views that phrase...condition is/are the manifestations of effects of negative outside impacts to a child's system/body/brain..I have my unchangeable beliefs/theory on how that happened to my sons, but will spare everyone else with my reasons my sons went from healthy/'normal' to all we've endured nearly 18 years. The Travoltas'quotes via CNN, et al, stating that Jett was happy every day of his life and brought a special joy to everyone he met make me cry even now, as that's the bottom line and the same thing folks say n feel about our precious Michael..All blessings, comforts and peace to Jett's mom n dad n sister n all who love him..We'feel ya' and hope yall stay strong for each other....

One of Travolta's 2 nannies was his gay lover. How qualified was he to be a nanny?

Kelly Preston was going on and on about how "there's no TEST for a chemical imbalance" with regard to mental illness. Guess what, Preston? There's no TEST for Kawasaki Syndrome, either. Does that mean it doesn't exist? It is completely irresponsible for people to deny proper medical treatment for their children because their religion deems the diseases nonexistant. L Ron Hubbard was a racist dropout who claimed to be a nuclear physicist, but who flunked his course in molecular and atomic phyics who said in a 1983 interview for Penthouse that ""Scientology is a power-and-money-and-intelligence-gathering game"
at 12:50 on January 7th, 2009
If for no other reason why his son should have been getting BETTER/ SOME medical treatment and at least is NEGLECT:
If he is having at LEAST one seizure a week. And seizures do KILL brain cells. How many weeks / years will it take? And at what price to the child? Will he loose his sight, speech ability to feed himself? All dignity. I have had seizures for 40+ years, I have had to go through the changes in medications when some worked and some didn't. Had no voice for 3 years, do not remember 2 years of my life ( that hurts because that's after my twins where born) and loved ones have had to deal with multiple behavioral changes because of medications and side effects but they didn't run away from the responsibility. Knowing what seizures are like I can't help but know the HELL that Jett must endured. Anyone who has had them knows they are both psychological and they are physical. But the psychological is usually not something we bring on ourselves but is a result of the stress caused by others. The mind can only absorb so much and then like a time bomb it blows. A seizure. If you knock it down one too many times it won't get back up.
at 20:17 on January 7th, 2009
How could the Travoltas claim that poor Jett was happy all the time when he suffered at least one seizure a week, UNMEDICATED. This poor kid was a victime of neglect and absolutely did not have to die. There are so many seizure medications today and if one doesn't work or has side effects, there are SO many others. He was left unmedicated to suffer seizures and eventually have a grand mal, and sustain who can even imagine what kind of fall and subsequent pain, and then die. This poor kid suffered needlessly. I guess Travoltas have to ratinalize in order to sleep at night.

What you will not find out from the media is that autism and seizures are caused by vaccinations. Vaccinations contain dangerous amounts of mercury and live viruses that leach into the human brain. This is why autistic people become suicidal. Mercury is the most dangerous metal on the planet. There is no safe level of mercury in the human body. Yet, we are injecting high levels of this metal into infants. one out of 99 infants will become very disabled and will be labeled autistic. The truth will come out eventually that our medical system and the vaccinations our murdering our children. Shame on your author for just repeating what you have heard. If you had done any real research you would find that autism is just a made up term by the medical industry to disguise their dangerous coverup. Read Jenny McCartheys story. If autism isn't caused by mercury poisoning then why are thousands of parents curing their kids of autism by detoxing the mercury in their bodies. Go figure. Time to wake up america and smell the bullshit you are being fed by the media

How refreshing to find someone here who relies on research instead of superstitions and gossip. Thank You!

scientology killed the young man. jet was not given proper medical treatment because the parents' cult won't allow it. Mr. and Mrs. Travolta are cult members. Many have died because of the cult, when will the US government end the dangerous evil cult like Germany, France and Spain have?

I think you need to change the title of this (pretty sensationalist) article - Jett died of a seizure. I don't understand why you are blaming John and Kelly for this.
Some of you think that Jett would not have died had his autism (for which no doctor who has treated Jett has ever given evidence) been recognised, but you all seem to be forgetting here that Jett died of a seizure - not of autism.
Also, there STILL seem to be people here who are talking about Scientology without knowing anything about it. You see, Scientology DOES allow medication - Jett WAS on medication for a while (Depakote), for his seizures. However, one of the side effects is severe damage to the liver. Also, with Jett, the medication began to lose its effectiveness. Therefore Jett had to be taken off the medication (after being advised by neurosurgeons). However, even with medication, Jett had a seizure every 3 weeks.
I am horrified that people think that John and Kelly, who were clearly very loving and devoted parents, think that they abused their little boy.
RIP Jett.

If Jett was currently suffering frequent seizures, why was he taken so far away from his doctors? Aside from all other speculations we have, another would be- This vacation should have been postponed. He should have been constantly supervised. With the 2 nannies, I do not get why he wasn't.
at 10:26 on January 8th, 2009
You have obviously never been on Depakote. I was 600 mg 4x a day for 3 years. It didn't kill me or destroy my liver. Actually it is considered the "prefered" drug for juvenile onset myoclonic seizures with are non-focal. I was given MAXIMUM dosage cause my seizures had to be stopped or I was going to die. Between grand mal and petit mal I was having up to 50 seizures a day. The only reason I got off the drug was one of the things it was doing to me was causing me to gain weight. That might sound vain but I went from 150 to 400 in 3 years but the the seizures completely stopped. The doctors decided it was time to try a different seizure drug without the side effects. So until I see this so called neurosurgeon somewhere..you

I was not aware John Travola had a son who was ill. When I heard of the boy's death and saw pictures of him, I realize Jett's actions looked very much like those of my grandson who also is16 and is Autistic. Believe it or not, it hit me very hard, seeing Jett's confusion while holding John's hand and being lugged behind him. Other pictures also had actions greatly resembling that of my grandson, whom I and his Aunt have been raising. That illness is Autism.
The bomber hat picture of Jett also hit me hard because of the sheer resemblance to that of my grandson wearing his bomber hat showin that face of innocence and love. Tomorrow my grandson comes home from the hospital that specializes in mental disorders, including Autism, something Jett apparently never had a chance to do and now never will.
I believe John and Kelly loved their son, as other photos reflect, but NO RELIGION OR EMBRASSMENT should come ahead of your child's welfare. I think John and Kelly will regret this error in judgment for the rest of their lives. Jett had no say in his treatment and never received the help he truly needed.
Ignorant people are everywhere and cause others to die! John should have listened to his brother and the other people with Autistic children who tried to warn him and Kelly.
at 18:25 on January 8th, 2009
I don't believe that John Travolta has caused his own son's death because of his improper care for Jett's Autism. Being a mother of a 6yr old Autistic child my self. I believe that it depends on how you feel. I feel that my child should get the help that he deserves for his Autism. But, although you don't get your child that help doesn't make you any less of a good parent. Jett had a wonderful life. He had loving parents that cared so much for him. Why put John Travolta and his family down because of a simple mistake like a Siezure that happened. It could happen to a person taking medication for their siezures. Lets all show some respect for John Travolta. He just lost his life (Jett). God Bless John T. and family
at 21:22 on January 8th, 2009
I've heard over the past 10 years that Jett had autism (the Travolta's live in our town) and now that I've watched videos of him and the story of his tragic and untimely death, I'm convinced he did in fact have autism. I'm an expert on autism due to the fact that I've been living 24/7 with my child with autism for 19 years and have closely watched a large group of my child's peers with autism. They are all very different and vary on where on the spectrum they fall, but there are certain characteristis that are unmistakable. Trying to hide the fact that your child has autism, especially a child moderate to severe on the spectrum has to be absolutely exhusting. I believe it is a lot easier to be open and honest and most people in turn will be more accepting and understanding. The Truth Will Set You Free, not L. Ron Hubbard
I wish the Travolta family all the peace and support that they need to get through this awful tragedy.
at 22:43 on January 8th, 2009
Jett was MURDERED by Scientology!
He would absolutely be alive today if his father was not a Scientologist and ignored all modern medical advice on how to treat his illness!

I speak from experience - I have an autistic son Jett's age. I want everybody who is judging John and Kelly to take a step back -- and stop. They are still grieving their son. Every autistic child is different, and no amount of speech therapy is going to make them talk if their brain isn't wired for it. The neighbor who claimed they abused him because he played video games all day, ate junk food, and avoided social contact. Speaking from experience, my son is watching youtube most hours that he is home, loves pizza and chocolate chip cookies, and would rather be on the computer than have any friends over. These are his choices. Have we tried other things? of course. Have John and Kelly? No doubt. Give this family some breathing space and back off.

The problem with the tragic death of Jett Travolta is this: Although all the circumstances are unknown, I can tell you as a former member of scientology (1970-1987) that they absolutely HATE any form of drug intervention (except drugs like antibiotics) and especially psychiatric drugs. There may have been some change since the time I was “in” but I doubt if there has been much of a shift. Most likely, they recommended basic scientology “auditing” , vitamins, and a quiet environment; which may not have been enough to keep him stable.
Scientology believes in “making the able more able” and privately holds the handicapped in low regard, ie, they must have done something to “pull in” that sort of condition, or they are a “degraded being” not really worthy of the effort to help. These are the types of arguments that were used against people when I was a scientologist when it suited scientology executives to minimize the influence of a friend or loved one. When the friend or loved one attacked scientology, they were deemed a “suppressive person” whose most basic nature is regarded as evil in the extreme. Such is the quality of balance in their skeptical nature.
Former scientologists know what I mean, and current scientologists who have been around for a while get very uncomfortable with these types of facts, because underneath it all, they are questioning what they see, and they don’t like the implications of the possible truth. The above is not my opinion, it is my experience of the official and inside beliefs of scientologists.
So the death of Jett Travolta is a big question mark to me. I wish it were not so. I know that the Travolta family loved their son, but only someone who has been in scientology for a time can know the pervasive influence of this religion over the most basic sensible qualities of human nature. That makes this type of event all the more tragic for the victims of scientology.

The Travoltas have a gift called "parental rights". Within that gift they have rights about how to raise their children. From what I have read their son was severley mentally disabled. The child is in a better place now. I am critisized in my community because I home school. Because I don't "run with the herd" and either do my children. What I find repelling is the people who have piggy backed on the death of this child to run their own hidden agendas. But now I understand why Nancy Grace has an audience. She has piggy backed on the death of a toddler (Caylee Anthony) for a paycheck for months now. She ought to be paying the Anthonys royalties. TheTravoltas had every right to decide how they could best cope with the burdens placd upon them with their child. Just because they chose not to copy their neighbor and submit a disabled child to the medical professionals as if he were some virus to be addressed doesn't make them wrong. There are plenty of "normal" teens on suicide watch these days. My biggest critic in town has a "normal" son who tried to kill himself last Christmas. Yet I am viewed as "weird" for homeschooling instead of having my kids run with his crowd. When you have a child it is up to you to make the calls on the tough decisions, because you have to live with yourself.

Everyone seems to forget that L Ron Hubbard was a SCIENCE FICTION WRITER...... The wise businessman created a CHURCH as a way to avoid paying taxes and generate income from followers.....of his science fiction church. How can any thinking person not know this ???
at 06:50 on July 5th, 2009
As a parent of an autistic child, I strive to seek the best interventions for my child. It's difficult to believe that blind faith took control over common sense. One has to have a critical view of everything; especially when it comes to our children. Since they reside in Florida, they were not investigated as officials were probably intimidated by their prominence and wealth. One more child that could have been afforded a future. Children need to be taught how to live with autism and not hide them away. There is a generation of children that will be adults and early intervention, social skills and a little bit of pubic tolerance will help them live within our society and not locked away.
Shame on Scientology for discounting actual disabilities!!!!!!
