Before you reach for the wrench, just hang on a sec... I'm doing a bit of bug reportage here on the front porch (hey, it's Sunday, gimme a break), and a production crew is filming the street's kids as they do battle over a tennis ball in the arena of street hockey. Evidently, it's newsworthy, since so few kids still do this. Supposedly this street has Toronto's healthiest kids.

They aren't just into hockey, but also biking, skateboarding, scooters... basically, anything that requires a helmet.

Apparently, in the era of video games, filmed entertainment and urban buildup, kids who aren't cooped up all day are newsworthy.

Hey, part of what makes a story newsworthy is answering the question:  "Why does this story matter?"  I think you answered that and this post is indeed newsworthy~~

I was just sitting on a bench waiting for the bus and I pushed the camera button as theses feet passed.... there was a hockey stick in the batch.

The number of overweight and obese children in the UK has risen
steadily over the past 20 years. The obesity epidemic is now a major
health concern. <...> It's thought that most children put on excess weight because their
lifestyles include an unhealthy diet and a lack of physical activity.

London's teenage victims of violence: London has seen 26 teenagers killed in 2007.

A report by the Children's Rights Alliance of England (Crae) says that
children in the UK are leading difficult and unhappy lives where 13% of
them have been bullied and 4.2% say they have never felt safe at school. <...> The
report, to the UN, says that there is a lack of respect from adults and
a culture of crime in which one in eight young people has carried a weapon in the last 12 months.

...isn't it nice to see that they're not all like that? Some of them lead lives, are happy, have fun and get treated fairly and with repect by their family and friends. Life should be more like this and less like the other.

New Year's eve 2007, in Chelmsford Ontario Canada, I was outside partying with family and neighbors. Partying in northern Ontario often includes bouts of street hockey. The kids enjoy it especially.

Thats my best friend, and her guy at the time. We were walking to his work after playing street hockey. I decided to take a few steps back and snap this photo.

What do I want for my birthday? For a Canadian transplanted to California, the thing I miss the most is shinny hockey, so I asked for a family street hockey game. After one game, it became a tradition.

My 'street hockey' photos were taken July 24th 2007. Ryan Getzlaf of the Anaheim Ducks brought the Stanley Cup home to Regina to celebrate, and we all showed up to help celebrate (even though I'm a Leafs fan). Lots of activities for the kids, including a street hockey tournament. Boy, it was hot that day, easily 40 degrees Celsius in the sun.
