According to a hypothesis posed by British scientists from the University of Leeds kissing, a kiss, et al. is less about spreading the love and more about spreading germs. Not to dash all of your romantic comedy fantasies but the hypothesis goes a little something like this, the distinctly homosapien habit of kissing passes a bug potentially hazardous in pregnancies, known as Cytomegalovirus, from man to woman, in turn giving the XX part of the equation adequate time to build up an immunity.

Though normally benign, the salivary-vectorial Cytomegalovirus can be dire if caught during pregnancy potentially leading to birth defects or even the death of unborn babies. Defects ranging from deafness to cerebral palsy pose a threat to the child if the mother has not built up an immunity.

Writing in the journal Medical Hypotheses, researcher Dr Colin Hendrie from the University of Leeds said: 'Female inoculation with a specific male's cytomegalovirus is most efficiently achieved through mouth-to-mouth contact and saliva exchange, particularly where the flow of saliva is from the male to the typically shorter female.'

Kissing the same person for about six months provides optimum protection, he added.

In the traditional sense of relationships the theory makes sense in that if a woman is with a specific partner for an extended period of time the kisses add up and eventually progress to more passionate lip-locking, building up the woman's immunity to the point where she is a veritable citadel against Cytomegalovirus. Then, when the relationship reaches the point where procreation is a legitimate possibility, because of the female's heightend immunity the odds of the child becoming infected in the womb are substantially lower.

So to all the guys out there, next time you get smacked across the face for coming on too strong and planting a kiss prematurely, just be honest: you're bettering her chances of having a healthy baby.
