my Aunt Lisa and Uncle Fritz (Lisa and Frederick Schiller) on their wedding day. They both escaped the nazis - she by fleeing illegally to England - i'm not sure how he got out. my uncle was actually drafted by the U.S. Army when he was near 40, deaf in one ear, and totally flat-footed. I guess they needed him that badly. He was never sent overseas. my aunt sewed silk pajamas into the inside of his wool uniform so it wouldn't itch so badly. i don't know if it was true love, but i think that their early connection in vienna, austria kept them grounded to each other when they both arrived in the u.s. and had lost much of their family to the holocaust. they had a history together when so much of their history had been erased. my aunt is my dad's older sister (born in 1917). she was a second mom to me and i always spent weekends sleeping over at their home when i was growing up. unfortunately both of them have died - he in 1993, and she in early 1995.
