Listening basically happens with the active
coordination of ears and mind. We have two ears but only one mouth which in another
way explains that listening is twice as hard as talking. People need to
practice and acquire skills to be good listeners, because a speaker cannot
throw you information. Information is an intangible substance that must be sent
by the speaker and received by an active listener. In the case of language
learning this is true indeed. For effective listening, gestures that indicate
that the listener is attentive are very useful and encouraging. It may at times
just cost the listener or the learner to nod his or her head. When we have a
child speaking to us, they often insist on our eyes to be on their face, as
they are unconsciously aware that it captures the essence of good listening.
