Listeria contaminated meats continue to plague. The latest alert from the CFIA (Canada Food Inspection Agency) came in this morning.  While no reported illnesses have resulted and a voluntary recall has been initiated, this is just the latest in a very long list of meat recalls in Canada for Listeria contamination alone.

OTTAWA, October 23, 2008 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Oickles Tasty Bites are warning the public not to consume Oickles Tasty Bites brand sandwiches described below because these products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The following Oickles Tasty Bites sandwiches are affected by this alert.

Product Best Before dates (up to and including)
Roast Beef Sandwich Oct 25, 2008 and Oct 26, 2008
Roast Beef Sub Oct 25, 2008 and Oct 26, 2008

These products have been sold at Oickles Auto Service at 5354 Hwy 10, New Germany, Nova Scotia and Getson Convenience at 3916 Hwy 325, Newcombville, Nova Scotia.

These sandwiches were made with roast beef manufactured at Les Salaisons Desco Inc. (EST 501). This roast beef had been tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

For more information consumers and industry can call the CFIA at 1-800-442-2342 / TTY 1-800-465-7735 (8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, Monday to Friday).

For information on Listeria monocytogenes, visit the Food Facts web page at: http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/fssa...

While consumers should be aware that any prepared meats may harbour this organism, cold cuts are particularly vulnerable to contamination.  This summer of recalls due to Listeria contamination has made many consumers wary of all prepared meats.

Combined with the caution being shown regarding cold cuts is the unease surrounding the source of contamination of food with E. coli 157 that has sickened many people in Ontario.

Barbara McPherson, I like this story. It's good stuff.

Yikes - there should be a major investigation into deli meat processing, this is getting ridiculous.  20 deaths, many more sickened, what else will it take?
