The listeria death toll across Canada rises to 19 with the recent deaths of two women, one from BC and the other from NB.

Re: the death in BC:

The senior, who died at Kelowna General Hospital, had an underlying chronic health condition that was being treated with oral steroid medication, which can increase the risk of this type of infection, authority spokesman Dr. Rob Parker said.  The woman had been in the community and was not a resident or in-patient at any Interior Health facility, but consumed deli meats while travelling this summer, the health authority said.

"It was a one-time purchase in Alberta … before the recall," Parker said.

If the Maple Leaf link is confirmed, the death would be the second in British Columbia tied to the outbreak that has swept the country in recent months. The first was confirmed on Aug. 29.

Re: the death in NB:

A woman in her early 80s, who was a nursing home resident and who had listeriosis, died in a New Brunswick hospital, officials said.  Dr. Eilish Cleary, New Brunswick's acting chief medical officer of health, said the woman died recently after she became ill in the nursing home where she lived.

It is the first case to be confirmed in the province since Maple Leaf Foods issued a recall of virtually all the products produced at a Toronto plant after a deadly listeria outbreak. Officials have identified 13 deaths directly linked to listeria found in meat from the Maple Leaf plant.

To date, there have been 13 directly linked listeria deaths across Canada, and 6 additional deaths are under investigation to determine if those individuals died from the same strain.  There are also 38 confirmed and 24 suspected cases nation-wide, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada.

For an up-to-date list of recalled items (there are hundreds), please refer to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency recall list.

Just think we cannot trust foods any more. Looking at pictures of Listeria on the web I thought how pretty they looked and decided to show this. Why? It is masked in our foods and we cannot trust what we eat.
No, I'm not becoming a vegetarian. Remember the tomato problem? We've got no choice but to eat what is sold in ours stores. We need to go after those who don't do their jobs.
Our lives depend on this.

One more death to add to the tally:

Another person has died from listeriosis linked to tainted meat processed at the Maple Leaf Foods plant in Toronto.

Officials will only say the 14th victim is an unidentified resident of Ontario.
