Phosphates are a very common additive to processed foods and new research from korea shows that they can cause an acceleration of lung tumour growth.

The experiments were undertaken on rats and UK experts stressed that there was no need for panic or action against food companies at this time as the results might not be replicated in humans.

Commonly-used food additives may fuel the growth of lung cancers, a Korean study on animals has suggested.

Processed foods including meat, cheese, and drink contain inorganic phosphates.

Researchers fed mice with lung cancer a diet with similar percentages of phosphates to those in human food, and found tumour growth accelerated.
