Massive Study to Investigate Near-Death Experiences

Cardiac arrest patients will lend invaluable insight into near-death experiences in a large study that will span across 25 hospitals and include 1,500 survivors within the US and UK.  Many individuals report seeing a white light or tunnel or having an out of body experience after they are resuscitated from cardiac arrest, and this is the first time this mysterious occurrence will be tested scientifically on such a large and reliable scale.

To test this, the researchers have set up special shelving in resuscitation areas. The shelves hold pictures - but they're visible only from the ceiling.

Dr Sam Parnia, who is heading the study, said: "If you can demonstrate that consciousness continues after the brain switches off, it allows for the possibility that the consciousness is a separate entity."

If researchers can provide evidence that consciousness is distinct from the body, there could be major implications within both scientific and religious schools of thought.

When do you expect results will be available?

I believe they were conducting this research over 3 years, so I imagine it will be some time before significant trends could be found within that time.

Terri Potratz, I like this story. It's good stuff. Just found this on NowPublic after coming across this article about the study in the Sudbury Star. According to this article, 10-20% of NowPublic.com users have had a Near Death Experience (extrapolating). This article also includes the concerns raised by some Gnostics about the study, which i agree with; it's good that studies are being made, but they point out that people report a wide range of experiences, and don't always report an in-the-room out of body experience. This is actually my own expeience; got stabbed and was told later by friends that the cops had told them the medics told them i was dead; they were taping the place off to be a murder scene when the medics corrected themselves.

What i remember, in a nut shell: first, becoming instantly wide awake from a semi-sleep blood loss state, as i popped out of my body. I was aware of only pitchblackness, no body. As I'd read about this before, i had no doubt i was dying, thought "oh, shit!!!" and prayed, "God, i'm in your hands- there's nothing i can do." Instantly i was back in my body, groggy, in pain and aware of medics working on me. Afterwards, I read a bunch of books on it, i didn't develop any psychic abilities, as some report- it did change my perspective somewhat. I had to give a speech on a memorable experience for a class and recounted it, i haven't gotten around to adapting it for online.

That's an amazing account - thank you for sharing that.

I've never had a NDE but hearing others' stories really fascinates me.  It will be interesting to see what comes of this study.
