McDonald’s Shrek Glass Recall Update: Offering $3 a Glass
McDonald's Are Now Offering $3 For the Return of Each Recalled Shrek Glass
On June 4 McDonald's announced they were recalling the Shrek glasses due to the presence of cadmium in the paint. In a somewhat unusual move, starting Wednesday June 9 McDonald's is now offering a $3 refund for each glass returned; they were originally sold for $1.99 with a food purchase and $2.49 without food.
Don Mays, senior director of product safety for Consumer Reports told the New York Times that it is very unusual for a company to offer more money than the product was sold for in a recall.
“If you offer a premium, it’s more apt to get consumers to respond to a recall and helps to get those unsafe products out of somebody’s home,” Mr. Mays said.
Customers just have to bring their glass(es) in to any McDonald's restaurant, no receipt required, and they will receive three dollars for each.
Ashlee Yingling, a spokesperson for McDonald's said:
“We are making sure our customers are fairly compensated for the recall experience,”
The risk to children due to the presence of cadmium is considered low, but it could come off in the hands of anyone holding the glass. About 7.5 million were sold to consumers.
