TASERING is becoming as usual as handcuffs for police officers when they encounter mentally dysfunctional citizens in America.

Sometimes mental patients are killed by gunshot, even when they present no threat to anyone.  That is alleged by the family on the video below who called police to difuse a situation with a mentally ill relative.   (See video on right of screen that opens):

Tasering citizens during emotional breakdowns is a spreading trend, although many citizens die after being Tasered and others experience permanent muscle damage.  On September 24, Inman Morales, a distraught New Yorker, was killed when he was standing naked and irrational on the balcony to his apartment.  Police Tasered him and caused him to fall 10 feet to the bare pavement (no protection was placed there by police prior to Tasering Morales).

Two days later, on September 26, a teen mother was Tasered in Canada, with police saying she was mentally disturbed.  Some people who wrote comments to the news article below felt that police should have overcome the 16-year-old girl without the need to electrocute her.

Apparently, it is open season on mental patients internationally.

Teen mom Tasered while holding baby

MOTHER, 16, TASERED TWICE WHILE HOLDING INFANT

Police feared for baby's safety
Sep 26, 2008 08:01 AM

VANCOUVER – Vancouver police say they had to use a Taser on a 16-year-old mother in order to say the life of her month-old baby.

A police department release says the young mother was "touched" with a Taser on her arm and back when officers feared she was holding her infant in a way that could smother him.

The incident occurred Monday afternoon in Vancouver when police were called after social workers were unable to convince the mom to hand over her child.

The baby was born with life-threatening conditions and there was concern he required immediate medical attention.

According to police, the teenager is mentally disturbed and the Taser was used only after prolonged negotiations had failed.  (See link for full article)

This writer has collected some interesting Taser videos for articles over time.

See the sad family members as they deal with the fact that sometimes, police are called to help with a mentally dysfunctional person, and police Taser the person.  Police are Tasering everyone from a suicidal man on an overpass (causing him to fall, also, by the way) to little old ladies in wheelchairs.  Watch police Taser shoppers and even a 78 year-old-man in a hospital.  Even children are not exempt from Tasering.  Spare the Taser, spoil the child. Good stuff, a lot of women are pretty disturbed a month after giving birth, and the guy that died, he was murdered. When the people of the scripture (torah, bible, quran) [or those that profess to be] fight each other the unimportant one and its followers gain.

Thank you, Sputnic!  I am so glad you pointed out the fact that lots of women suffer from a temporary condition - post partum depression - for months after giving birth.

IS IT AGAINST THE LAW TO BE DEPRESSED AROUND HERE???

I tell you, if it is, then there are a lot of us facing Tasering and arrest soon with the economy like it is, Sputnic.  Maybe some of those who presently feel insulated from the issues that face other people might find themselves in similar circumstances some day.  And if that day comes, I hope they find compassion, although they are slow to deal compassionately and to DEMAND COMPASSION for others like this young mother and the man on the NY balcony.

Stop with the apathy, people!  Get involved in the quest to decriminalize mental illness and discontinue the overuse of Tasers, please.  People are being abused and killed all around you.  It is 3:00 a.m. for these fellow human beings.  The phone call is for YOU!

Long before becoming a member of NP an incident occurred in my town that involved tasering - police both tasered and pepper sprayed a man at the same time. This resulted in his head catching fire. So apparently there is no end to the hijinks involving tasers.

Thanks, Mikasi.  I remain amazed at man's inhumanity to man.

Tasers should be outlawed. And the 'law enforcement officials' who weild them and kill their victim should be charged, with at the very least, Manslaughter. JMO.

Some people are insisting that Tasers be banned, and they have launched the following petition:     http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/ban-tasers-from-police

Thanks for your comments.

The first requirement shud be that each cop in America should be tased at least one time a year. Lest they forget what it feels like. Sputnic, to expect men to understand post partum depression is akin to having the male senators take Viagra off the Insurance formularies on prescriptions. THEY JUST DON'T GET IT!!!  To the men that do understand, thanks to all of your mothers and wives that helped you understand and to yourseslves for accepting their advice. I agree that the cops should be charged in the death of the man tased.

Thanks for your comments, Gayla.

You are very generous in your assessment by saying, "They just don't get it!"  The truth is that police DO GET IT.  Police recognize when they are dealing with a mental patient or someone who may not have a history of mental illness, but the subject is acting very irrationally and may need special method of arrest.

The problem, Gayla, is that for police, Tasering is the METHOD OF CHOICE when dealing with any people who are mentally dysfunctional for any reason, even a teen mother suffering post partum depressing.  The Tasering continues despite the fact that a dozen people experiencing delirium were reportedly arrested without injury in Tennessee this year when police used a tranquilizer rather than Taser.

PLEASE look at the videos at the links on this page.  Police are Tasering old people, children, and even animals are not exempt.  Look at the videos and watch some people die, some go into convulsions, and hear the fear and pain as they respond to their Tasering.  See the sad family members as they deal with the fact that sometimes, police are called to help with a mentally dysfunctional person, and police Taser the person.

Sometimes, mental patients are still shot to death during lunacy arrests, although Tasers were available to officers.  If Tasers had been used in the arrest on the video below, just perhaps the patient might have lived (although over 230 people have died after Tasering).  The grieving woman on filmcalled police to difuse a situation with her mentally ill brother, and he was shot to death by police.   (See video on right of screen that opens):

duo, I think tasers are becoming used much more freely - it's scary as we still don't understand the full extent of what they can do, and they react differently to each person they are used on

Thanks for the flag and comments, Amy.  This story has been front page at Care2, where I sent a link!  Most of the people there agree with those of us here at NowPublic, that Tasers are used too much and in situations where other solutions would work just as well.

If I were the supervisor in such a situation as the officers say they faced with an irrational 16-year-old girl holding her infant son, I would likely have just told two officers to go subdue the girl with their superior strength and get the baby.  What they did actually endangered both mom and son, because a one-month-old who falls on its head could be in the same shape as the Tasered New Yorker on Tuesday -- dead!  She could have dropped the baby plus rolled on it, crushing the babe with her weight as she went into muscular spasms.  Some people have them when Tasered, and police did not know that this teen mom would not have them.

Tasers put mental patients at risk.  In this case, Canadian police also risked the wellbeing of an infant.

Sad.

hi Mary, I can get to your links fine here and on care2. Tasers are 'out of hand'. The original article itself wasn't that detailed for background information and what 'mental illness' or 'mental health problems' the girl had.

Tasers are not the answer. Keep at it, and hope to be up to it myself soon.

happy b-day tomorrow

Thx. Cheryl.  Technical issues.

Whereas Tasers may have their place in certain circumstances, they should be among law enforcement's last resorts when dealing with situations that have no other solution except Tasers or live ammunition.  Tasers beat live ammo, but not by much, and for some people, not at all.
