More Sleep is Key to Fighting and Preventing Colds
Researchers have found that the key to cold prevention is simple: cultivate a healthy sleeping pattern. Those who get a solid 8 hours of sleep a night are less likely to suffer from the common cold virus, compared to those who get 7 hours or less. It is suspected that the reason for this link may be that sleep strengthens the immune system at the cellular level.
During the cold season, staying out of range of sneezing co-workers may be impossible.
The study in Monday's Archives of Internal Medicine mimicked those conditions by exposing participants to a common cold virus -- rhinovirus -- and most became infected with it.
But not everyone suffered symptoms. The people who slept less than seven hours a night in the weeks before they were exposed to the virus were three times more likely to catch a cold than those who slept eight hours or more.
If you have problems sleeping, try the following in order to avoid prescription sleeping pills:
- schedule a regular bedtime
- keep computers and televisions out of your bedroom
- exercise daily
- try a white noise machine or soothing CD
- avoid eating before bedtime
- keep a journal and write in it for a few minutes before bedtime
- avoid caffeinated beverages before sleep
- take a hot shower before bed
- use the bathroom right before turning in
- keep your room as dark as possible, or wear an eye mask

Well there you go. I do try to get enough sleep (not least because I'm a bit lazyhead) but for health reasons too!
