NP Rank:
Most of the House GOP voted to kill Medicare
Out one side of their mouths, the Republicans have been attacking President Obama's health care reform plan as socialism, as a government takeover, etc. (insert your own scaremongering words here).
Out the other side, the same Republicans have been defending Medicare, inciting seniors to be afraid of Obama's "government plan" and telling them how much the GOP supports them.
Except they don't. On April 2 of this year, 137 House Republicans -- a majority of the caucus -- voted in favor of the GOP's "alternative budget," which included ending Medicare. (This was H.AMDT.75 to H.CON.RES.85, which failed 137-293. Roll Call vote 191.)
That's correct, most of the House GOP voted earlier this year to kill Medicare and force seniors into the hands of private insurers. Thank goodness the Democrats won in 2008 or seniors might have gotten left out in the cold because no one would insure them with pre-existing conditions. Or because they couldn't afford the ridiculous price-gouging of insurance companies.
The Republicans can't have it all three ways: First, that a government-run health care program will somehow be terrible and require people to be killed; AND that the government-run health care program called Medicare is great and seniors should be proud that the GOP supports it; AND that Medicare is a terrible wasteful program that they want to take away so that seniors have to go to overpriced, underserviced private insurance companies.
Sorry, Republicans, but you just contradicted yourself right out of the conversation. Sit down, shut up, and let the 70% of Americans who want health care reform done right -- with the choice of a government-run public option -- have their way. Majority rules, right? Elections have consequences, right?
A final note, in case any seniors missed it: Most of the House GOP voted to TAKE AWAY MEDICARE earlier this year. Why don't you give them hell?
Here's a list of all 137. Find out if yours was one of them! Give them a call!

If you click on "Amendments" you'll see the one by Rep. Ryan, which was the alternative budget.
And here's the Thomas link to the text of the amendment itself: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/cpquery/R?cp111:FLD010:@1%28hr073%29
