Canada's food watchdog has now issued a recall of Fresh Obsessions brand 'ready to serve pre-washed sliced white mushrooms' as they could be infected with Listeria monocytogenes.

The recall affects 227-gram packages sold in Ontario with the UPC code 0 69200 00902 2 and lot code R12398.

No associated illnesses have been reported, the CFIA said.

Symptoms of listeriosis include:

  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Stomach cramps
  • Diarrhea
  • Severe headache
  • Constipation
  • Persistent fever
  • Stiff neck
  • Loss of balance
  • Convulsions

People who eat foods contaminated with listeria may carry the bacteria and still not develop listeriosis. Those most vulnerable to developing the disease include the elderly, infants and patients with a compromised immune system.

About 12 deaths so far have been linked to listeriosis.

Here is a partial list of recalled products so far from stores such as Loblaw Superstores, and the Real Canadian Superstore:

07133 Boston Pizza SHAVED ROAST BEEF FROZEN 100 63100 07133 9 09FE16 750 g

18015 Burns REGULAR PEPPERONI 900 64000 18015 8 08DE18 2.1 kg

One has to wonder though how this happened in the first place. These bacteria are present in foods so how does it get to the point that the infection is so bad that people could die from it? And mushrooms now too? It's getting to be a bit of an epicdemic perhaps.

amyjudd, I like this story. It's good stuff. OKay Let's see here, Listeria comes from bacteria in Animal Poop, Mushrooms are grown in Animal Poop, so consumers should have pretty much figured out what their eating and where it comes from!  Soooooooooooooooo, guess a good scrub of your mushrooms would be in order as long as I can remember, that is the cardinal rule since Christ was a CHild. Oh yeah and dont run with scizzors either, another cardinal rule/

amyjudd, I like this story. It's good stuff.  I thought I was being a fanatic by peeling my mushrooms, but recently I've run across others who do it.  You can't really clean them by brushing them and never buy pre-sliced ones.
