In the Huffington Post,  by Dr.  Mark Hyman, " Why Current Thinking About Autism is Completely Wrong",   September 5,  2009:

Autism is caused by poor mothering." That was the belief of the medical community until the late 1960s.

"Autism is a genetic brain disorder." That is what most people -- and most of the medical community -- believe today.

I'm here to tell you that neither one of these statements is true.

Hyman is a practicing physician and a pioneer researcher,  and founder of  the UltraWellness Center.  The essay by him is so involved,  it does not easily lend itself to a copy/paste account.  I would highly recommend that readers who take an interest in the skyrocketing rates of autism in this country read the whole piece and come to their own  conclusions.   Hyman believes that autism is a systemic disease,  and adheres to a bio-chemical explanation of autism and other mental illnesses in children.  His cure:   A complex regimen of vitamin treatment and mineral therapy,  including therapeutic doses of magnesium and zinc.  In addition,  support of the brain structure and chemistry using Omega-3 fats.

Currently,  there are doctors who take a similar approach to cancer,  and have the same excellent results. (Admittedly,  not always,  but it is worth thinking about,  when traditional medical therapies have failed or simply been exhausted).    I think Hyman can be said to have admirably gone beyond the '60s parenting/' 90s brain disorder dichotomy with regard to childhood autism.   The entire article can be read at:  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-mark-hyman/why-current-thinking-abou_b_275753.html

Yes,  that is a point:  so many older women giving birth.  And yes,  the lower stores of the omega-3 would effect they myelin sheath.  Thus,  there is a sociological lesson, and an extremely important one.  Thanks so much for such important additional information you have supplied.
