A New York City lawmaker wants to declare war on the city's pigeons and says he will not be dissuaded by the difficulties faced by London and Venice in ridding themselves of the ubiquitous birds.City Councilman Simcha Felder on Monday called on the city to levy a fine of as much as $1,000 on people feeding pigeons, distribute bird contraceptives, and employ hawks to scare the birds away.
He also suggested appointing a "pigeon czar" to orchestrate the fight, a plan that has ruffled the feathers of animal lovers.
"Cities are lifeless places. People don't appreciate the fact that we have some wildlife," said Al Streit, director of The Pigeon People, an organization that rescues injured birds.

uusjio, Back in 2000, London’s Mayor Ken Livingstone declared war on Trafalgar Square’s world famous pigeons. He banned the traditional sale of corn on the Square in an attempt to starve the flock. The Square’s pigeons are currently fed daily at 7.30am. by savethepigeons.org.
Hawks are being deployed to terrify and kill them and new legislation is being planned to ban Save The Trafalgar

I had no idea that there was an organized movement to feed the scavenging birds... particularly when Central London is so much of a mess.

You see them scavenging everywhere, anywhere they might find food, rubbish bags, pavements and sometimes they come into houses and establishments.
They would be better off moving them to the countryside where they would be able to find food.

I love the idea of bringing in more hawks! I wonder if they actually like the taste of garbage-eating street-pigeon, though.

Perhaps the humble pigeon is, to the hawks' taste buds, the equivalent of the hot dogs from pushcart vendors.

Hawks they do take pigeons but only on the ground. They are ground hunters and will take quail, pigeons and doves. They feed primarily on rodents and snakes, of which the former rodents(rats & mice), there are millions of in London.
Peregrine falcons feed on pigeons, doves, grouse, shorebirds, and jays.
