Nuts can cut heart problems by ngr07

Just 30g of nuts a day on top of a Mediterranean style diet can cut heart problems. Scientists believe the nuts contain compounds that stop damage caused by insulin.

A Mediterranean diet in itself has been shown to be healthier than other western diets and the addition of nuts to it seems to make it even healthier.

Researchers tested the eating plan on patients with a condition called metabolic syndrome, a group of symptoms including obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and insulin problems.

The syndrome is seen as a early indication that a patient will go on to develop heart disease or diabetes.

Scientists tested the effects of changing the diets of 1,200 patients, two thirds of whom were suffering from the syndrome.

Given different diets for a year, the number with the syndrome fell by 13.7 per cent among those who ate a Mediterranean diet rich in fish, fruit and vegetables as well as 30g of nuts a day.
