President Obama's administration is keeping a decades-old promise to Native Americans.  His spending bill includes $17 million for a new health care facility on the Fort Berthold Reservation.

NEW TOWN, N.D. (AP) – The Three Affiliated Tribes were promised a new health clinic decades ago in return for land lost to the Garrison Dam on the Missouri River. They’re finally getting it.

A spending bill signed by President Barack Obama includes $17 million for a new health care facility on the Fort Berthold Reservation. Money has been authorized by Congress before but never actually appropriated.

“We’re ecstatic,” said Jim Foote, project manager for the Elbowoods Memorial Health Center. “Perseverance is the key. This council didn’t give up.”

The health care center will be built on 120 acres that the Three Affiliated Tribes own north of Fort Berthold Community College in New Town. Most of the design work is expected to be done by June, with officials awarding the construction contract later that month.

“It’s just historic,” Foote said.

The health center is to open in early 2011. It will be six times larger than the Minne-Tohe Health Center west of New Town, which has been the main medical facility since the 1960s, and will have about three times the staff. Fort Berthold Community College is to help with training, Foote said.

“My thoughts and those of the entire Tribal Council are with the many members of the tribe who are no longer with us and with our elders who fought for this facility over the past 60 years,” Tribal Chairman Marcus Levings said.

Never learned how.  Sorry.  I ensure that credit gets to the original sources, as you see.

Can you help me to get my article placed in my lineup where it should be on this lineup of my articles?  http://my.nowpublic.com/search?fulltext=1&type=story&keys=mary+neal

I updated it yesterday, but it shows up on page 3 of the lineup rather than p. 1.

Best!

Jim!  I have missed you.  How are you?  It is so good to know you are still writing.  I will have to add you to my favorites - I just learned how to do that.

As far as President Obama doing something good, I can give you more positive news.  He added $25 per week to unemployment checks (I don't know if that is across the board). The president also offered an extension on unemployment benefits that I was told the governor of my state, Georgia, declined.  Bailing out the unemployed among Georgia's workforce is not acceptable, I suppose.

Thank you for commenting, Jim.  It is real good to hear from you!

Good news! Yet long overdue. How sad it is that so many who fought for this promise to be kept are not alive to experience the benefits due in 2011.

There is a message for all of us not to give up. Even if we won't reap the rewards ourselves, we can take heart that, because of our dedication and tenacity, generations who follow will.

My friend who is a Native American has a very interesting page at Care2 with more information regarding Native Americans in the 21st Century.

If you look to the top right side of her page you will be able to access many articles that she publishes at Care2 News Network. She is a member of a number of groups, some of which are dedicated to Native American concerns.  If you scroll down her page, you will see the list of her groups, and you can click the links and visit the groups to see more about modern Native Americans.  Kat is very involved in animal rights and environmental concerns, also.  Native Americans generally recognize a spiritual bond with Mother Earth and the animal kingdom.

Enjoy a trip to my friend's page.  The music and photography are awesome!

Kat has so many interesting graphics that her page may take a moment to come up. Let me know what you think!.  Have a fun trip into the world of Native Americans.

O'siyo {Hello} Mary!  Thank you for this wonderful article, my friend!  I am SO happy that at least ONE "promise" the government made to the Indians is being fulfilled.  Up to this point, they only kept ONE of the Treaties/Promises they ever made with the Indians:  The promised to take our land, and they took it!

Congratulations on the new health center, Kat.  I know that President Obama got a good deal of support from Native Americans during his election.  I am pleased that he plans to keep this vow for the new health center that was made over 60 years ago.  As you may know, I write mostly about justice issues, and your new health center is truly delayed justice.

While you are at NowPublic, please see more of my articles by clicking on the "duo" at the sign of the dogs.

Thank you for commenting Charlie. It is good to see one vow being kept to the Native Americans.

This article was front page at Care2News for a couple of days so far.  Our NP numbers may not reflect that because Kat reprinted the article at the site.  But without exception, everyone commenting here and at Care2 congratulate Native Americans and the Obama administration.

Thanks for your comments.  The Obama administration is to be commended on this positive step for healthcare and for fulfilling a 60+ year-old promise.
