Have you noticed with all this talk of Wall Street Rescues (That's a politically more palatable term for BAILOUT), no one is saying this has to work.
I was reading a piece from a book in my library entitled "Chronicle of the World," and it detailed a meeting that took place on Oct. 24, 1929 in the offices of J.P Morgan and Co.
The bankers, closeted away in the paneled offices, agreed to infuse capital into the system in an effort to boost investor confidence. They collectively kicked in $25 million.
Needless to say, it was not enough to protect the little guy. The resulting depression lasted from 1929 until 1939. There was a decade of federal intervention that essentially created the systems most of us have grown up with. Yet, it took a world war to really bring the U-S economy back....
These are times of change.... let's just hope the necessary changes don't come with an October surprise that makes our $700 billion no more than throwing good money after bad.
