Many people drink a glass or two of red wine a day because they have heard of its health benefits in relation to heart disease but new information from the World Cancer Fund says that a glass of beer a day or two glasses of wine can increase your chance of getting bowel or liver cancer by a fith.

The risk of getting inflicted with liver and bowel cancer define increases by up to 20 percent in people who drink one pint of beer everyday, as per scientists at the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF).

The same kind of harmful effects can be possible in people who consume a large glass of wine, vodka or gin every day.

According to Dr. Rachel Thompson, Science Programme Manager at the WCRF, the probability of getting affected with bowel and liver cancer define increases a lot if a person intakes two units of alcohol daily.

Dr. Thompson said, “If you are drinking a pint of lager or a large glass of wine everyday, then this might not seem like a lot.” She further added, “But the science shows you are increasing your risk of bowel cancer by 18 percent and your risk of liver cancer by 20 percent.”

But she agreed that many people are still not aware of the cancer risk associated with alcohol despite the fact that a multitude of studies have shown this relation.

Wow, crazy - a fifth is a lot of difference!

Thanks for the bad news.  That is a significant increase.

I'm getting conflicting information. Some studies say one or two glasses of wine is good for the heart, and this study says that amount can be dangerous to the liver and bowel. It makes one wonder if whoever funding these studies can dictate the results.

Here's the thing...

If you look, there appears to be a theme here... things which increase your heart health are not neccesarily good for you from a cancer perspective.  And vice versa...

Totally agree - now a report also tells us that binge drinking even just a few times damages the brain too

All the research in the world seems to forget one thing, we are all going to die eventually, no matter if we jog or drink, it's inevitable, 100%. In the immortal words of The Specials, "enjoy yourself, it's later than you think, enjoy yourself while you're still in the pink. The years go by, as quickly as a wink. Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it's later than you think." Just don't enjoy yourself too much.

As amyjudd says, a fifth more is a lot of difference, but it's still a misleading representation of the statistics! Let's say the chance of contracting liver and bowel cancer is, say 1%, then 20% more chance would be 1.2% - not a dramatically greater chance at all!

Even if the chance is 20%, then 20% (or a fifth) more would only be 24%. Again, not dramatically greater.

Go ahead and enjoy the beer!

Yes.. but for how long?

If I drink one beer a day for a week, does that increase it a 5th?  Come on guys... give us some real details, this tells us nothing...
