The orange that peels in just 35 seconds

We are always being urged to eat 5 fruit and veg portions per day to keep our mind and bodies healthy but some fruits are more difficult than others to eat when a quick snack is wanted. Oranges for instance are not eaten as snacks at work as often as say bananas because they are seen as time consuming and potentially messy. Well that might be going to end with the introduction of the 35 second peel orange. We have a saying in the UK when describing a person who is tight with their money and won't buy a round at the bar we say 'he could peel an orange in his pocket' well maybe the new easy peel orange will see us all being able to do that...

As lunchtime snacks go, it's hardly the most straight forward option.

Its tough peel and unpredictable squirts of juice make eating an orange on the move a risky choice.

But one supermarket claims to have discovered an 'easy peel' orange, which it says is ready to eat in just 35 seconds.

Sceptical, but ever hopeful of finding an orange which doesn't end up all over my tie, I headed for my nearest Sainsbury's to see what all the fuss is about.

At 59pence each, the 'easy-peel' variety are at the top end of the price range.

But within seconds of peeling, it's easy to see why.

The skin is easier to pierce than that of a conventional orange.

And once my fingers are firmly underneath the peel, it all starts to come off in one piece.

This was taken at a local market in Saint John, New Brunswick in the East Coast of Canada. These oranges were so fresh and delicious. Yummy!

Simple winter breakfast in Tunisia, sweet oranges (not oranges that are sweet, but a type of orange - "orange douce") and pomegranates, both just pick form the tree. Can't beat that for health.

Oranges are one of the underestimated fruits in the market but it has overwhelming benefits to our health. It is easy to peel an orange, just start to press one thumb on the soft portion then you can even peel it in less than 15 seconds...
