The CFIA has recalled peanut butter from Haiti due to the suspicion that it contains aflatoxin.  Description follows:

The Pidy brand Pur Mamba (peanut butter-piment), product of Haiti, is sold in a 1 lb. plastic container bearing UPC 0 00000 71726 7. The affected product has been distributed in Quebec.

The product has been distributed in Quebec.
While it may seem a small market, aflatoxins are potent poisons.  They are produced by fungi growing on peanuts.  The toxins they produce are carcinogens.  Ingestion of aflotoxin contaminated products can lead to permanent liver damage or death.
For more information consumers and industry can call the CFIA at 1-800-442-2342 / TTY 1-800-465-7735 (8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, Monday to Friday).

Other foodstuffs may contain trace amounts of aflatoxins.  Pecans, corn, wheat, and cottonseed oil may contain small amounts.  To minimize exposure, discard any mouldy looking foods and any nuts that are shriveled or discoloured.  The FDA recommends that you stick to major brands of nuts and nut butters to be on the safe side.

aflatoxins are not dangerous immediately.  it takes many years of consuming continuously to result in "permanent liver damage"; and aflatoxins are also found in American peanuts.  why the focus on Haiti, especially over just a "suspicion"?  maybe Haitian peanut butter is so delicious that Americans are afraid of competition, so they blow the whole thing out of proportion.  anything to bring Haiti down, right?

Thank you for taking the time to read and comment on this posting.  I don't know about international conspiracies to bring Haiti down, but it's better to err on the side of caution with aflatoxins.  As you point out in your comments, these toxins are found in other foodstuffs and the effect is cumulative.
