Peanuts are getting a bad rap... since Peanut Corporation of America was identified as the source of the salmonella outbreak, shoppers are wary of all peanut-containing products, regardless of from where their legumes come.

As a result, sales are down and peanut butter purveyors are worried that consumers will build new shopping and eating habits that do not include things like peanut butter or dry roasted peanuts.

The drop-off is so striking that brands such as Jif are taking the unusual step of buying ads to tell shoppers that their products are not affected, and giving them a coupon to make sure they do not learn to live without a staple that almost every child loves -- and more than a few of their parents, too.
