Burlington, Vt. - This morning, PETA dispatched a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, cofounders of ice cream icon Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc., urging them to replace the cow's milk in their products with human breast milk. PETA's request comes in the wake of news reports that a Swiss restaurant owner will begin purchasing breast milk from nursing mothers and substituting breast milk for 75 percent of the cow's milk in the food he serves. PETA points out to Cohen and Greenfield that such a move on their part would lessen the suffering of dairy cows and their babies on factory farms and benefit human health at the same time.

"The fact that human adults consume huge quantities of dairy products made from milk that was meant for a baby cow just doesn't make sense," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Everyone knows that 'the breast is best,' so Ben & Jerry's could do consumers and cows a big favor by making the switch to breast milk."

politisite, I like this story. It's good stuff.

How on earth are we going to mass-produce breast milk?

I wrote PETA and asked them if they're out of their freakin minds?

they wrote back that it was a tongue-n-cheek request of ben and jerry's to publicize animal abuse in diaries.

I've got nothing against PETA but human milk? Ben & Jerry's ice cream is what I mostly eat for ice cream. I highly doubt this will happen.

Well, that would raise the prize, Human milk does trade at $7.00 a litre today and there is a Woman in France that does make Cheese with Human milk and made quiet a sensation, it sales well and taste good.   May raise the cost of cheese substantially though.

according to PETA's statement,

we shouldn't eat beef, because baby cows need mom and dad
shouldn't drink milk, 'cause it's for baby cow
no eggs, because those eggs are baby chickens!

I think PETA is talking non-sense, we drink cow milk, we eat beef, because we are living under something called the "food chain". is there enough human milk for everyone to drink? I don't think so...

I could go for a nice butt steak.  And a chick leg.

Yes, humans are the only mammals that drink another mammal's milk.  We are also the only mammals that invent recipes and cook them on the stove.  We are omnivores.  We eat nuts and berries and plants, meat and fish, milk and eggs.

PETA used to have a good reputation, used to help protect animals.  Now they have become the lunatic fringe.  They are a bunch of flakes and nuts.

Hey!  Maybe Ben & Jerry can make ice cream out of them!

What? PETA is nasty. This is wayyyy past the line of caring for animals. This is CRAZY!

Just ask any PETA... why do we have incizers?  I hguess we need that ripping ability for those touch veggies

They're for dealing with undercooked parsnips. Very difficult.

(I'm an ex-vegetarian: 11 years without eating meat made me a very creative cook, though I eventually went back to eating meat- not everyone's body chemistry responds well to not eating things that blink. Staying healthy and strong without animal protein is really high-maintenance, actually, and barbecuing doesn't smell quite as good)

I'm a vegetarian and don't agree with the suffering of dairy cows obviously ...

I however feel theres a better solution to this problem, eg. freerange non battery milk

I am all for people donating breast milk, but feel it should go to use in hospitals for premature babies, or to other countries to help feed starving orphans ... not so people in the western world can feel guilt free when eating over priced ice cream.

Frankly, though, this should probably go under "strange" as opposed to "health." ;o]

As with others, I would ask "are they joking?" I mean, they must be. That or nuts... There is no industrialized way to procure breast milk in quantity and/or ensure quality / homogeneity standards required for producing a consistent product. Not to mention the risk of diseases that might be passed through mother's milk.

The whole thing sounds ludicrous. They must have something better to do with their time than this!

Mchael:  Thanks for the good stuff. It is posted in both.  PETA said that it was a provocative release with no real desire for fruition.  PETA uses many provocative methods to get their point out.  Mostly using naked woman.

Ben and Jerry's ice cream stand it America.
I do not think we should have human milk in our ice cream as it will make it taste odd!!

Peta, is stupid. The say that milk from cows causes outism(however it is spelt) that is the stupidest thing I have heared in my life. They get their resources from a dog crap pile. You are born with outism and you cannot get it from milk, scientist and doctors say milk is good for us, who are you going to believe a doctor or Peta? Stupid peta..

politisite, I like this story. It's good stuff. Just friggin nasty, on the other hand there are millions of women who cannot breast feed and babies without the natural defences mothers milk would bring, and PETA wants to use it for ice cream, whatta bunch a Sh*t for brains organization.
