Pfizer's Biggest Victims Are Women by candidusmaximus

Big Pharma has long faced criticism for its questionable conduct and alleged "acts of wrongdoing" during drug trials in poor nations. And now, as the BBC reports, Pfizer has been accused of killing almost two hundred people when antibiotic drug tests were conducted during a Nigerian meningitis epidemic in 1996.  Pfizer is being sued for $2 billion in damages.

A Nigerian court has issued arrest warrants for three members of staff from drugs company Pfizer over an alleged illegal drugs trial in 1996.

The three are also accused of defying a summons to appear in court last month. Pfizer is accused of killing 11 children and injuring 181 others when an antibiotic called Tovan was tested on them during a meningitis epidemic.

But Pfizer denies the claims, saying they were victims of the outbreak which killed 12,000 children in six months.

The northern state of Kano is suing Pfizer for $2bn in damages and pressing criminal charges over the test.

But the company, as well as denying any wrongdoing, has challenged the jurisdiction of the Kano state court.
