It may not be what every child hopes for in their stocking, but  it may be exactly what many young women need in this time of financial crisis. This year Planned Parenthood of Indiana is spreading good cheer via condoms and birth control.

While health costs continue to rise, many women may choose to overlook certain individual needs such as yearly check-ups and birth control.

The group, a network of 35 clinics, decided to offer the vouchers because so many people are uninsured or are putting off health care because of prohibitive costs, said Betty Cockrum, its president. About 800,000 Indiana residents do not have health insurance, Ms. Cockrum said.

Planned Parenthood’s checkups, which include Pap tests and breast exams, typically cost $58. The vouchers can be used for those exams, medication, birth control and other services.

While opponents will find reason to fault Planned Parenthood for this "gift", most will agree that any help at this time is greatly appreciated.
