17 Teen Girls' Pregnancy Pact

The skyrocketing pregnancy rate at a Massachusetts high school is being explained by an alleged pact amongst some of the girls to all get pregnant at the same time. The sources below go into a bit more detail, but the details are somewhat vague, i.e. were the guys involved in this pact, if it exists?

A Massachusetts city is investigating an apparent teenage "pregnancy pact" that has at least 17 high-school girls expecting babies, four times more than last year, including many aged 16 or younger.

There are reports that some of the girls - none of whom is older than 16 - entered into a pact to have their babies together.

The girls and their families have so far made no comment. Officials are also investigating the ages of the fathers.

Some are believed to be in their twenties and could face the possibility of being charged with having sex with minors.

"Some girls seemed more upset when they weren't pregnant than when they were," Gloucester High School principal Joseph Sullivan told Time magazine.

Local officials say that nearly half of the girls had entered into a bizarre pact to have their babies together.

jordan, good heavens! I really don't know how to react to this. Of all the things to make a pact about, getting pregnant would not be the first one to spring to my mind!

I've a feeling those poor girls didn't really think this through.

An update:

A small fishing town in Massachusetts is coming to terms with the news that 17 teenaged girls at the local high school are pregnant, almost half of them having entered a pact to have babies and raise the children collectively.

The head, Joseph Sullivan, told Time magazine that some of the girls seemed upset when they received negative results. Others reacted to positive test results with high fives, talking about how they would hold a celebration for the baby.
Christopher Farmer, the school superintendent, said inquiries were started when the number reached 10. "They are young white women. We understand that some of them were together talking about being pregnant and that being a positive thing for them," he told Associated Press.
The disclosure of the pact, and reports that one of the fathers is a 24-year-old homeless man, has sparked a spirited debate in Gloucester about teenaged sex. In May the medical director and nurse at the school clinic resigned in protest at the refusal of the local hospital that controls their funds to allow them to distribute contraceptives to pupils without parental consent.
I was amused by Mr. Farmer's surprise that white girls could get pregnant. Are they not taught this in school? Are there some newly-nervous guys at that particular school now?
Thanks for the comments and flags.

jordan, I like this story. It's good stuff. Boy have times changed.  When I was that age, pregnancy was the worst thing that could happen.  Stupid, stupid girls.  How did they think they could support babies at age 16?

I am not a betting man Rhonda, but I reckon Support will come from a generous taxpayer funded welfare, publicity and course guiness record book, talk shows, and of course the Maury Povich-Jerry Springer shows who have audiences who eat this stuff up.  Certainly the fathers will not be held responsible.

I am delighted to read of the pact.  I have just gor myself pregnant at the age of 14.  My Mom had me when she was that age.  She too is very happy for the girls.
