Potato Chips That's Good for the Earth
The manufacturer of this potato chip, Kettle Foods, strives to "giving back where [they] take away...[they] use natural resources,...give back by diligently recycling, using renewable energy, reducing [their] environmental footprint, and supporting non-profit organizations."
Here are some interesting facts:
Solar Power: More than 600 solar panels are mounted on the rooftop of their Salem,Oregon facility which generates enough power each year to make 250,000 bags of potato chips and reduce annual carbon dioxide by 65 tons!
Biodiesel: 100% of the waste from the vegetable oil used to manufacture the potato chips are converted into biodiesel (a natural alternative to petroleum diesel fuel) for cars.
Wind Power: Kettle Foods is currently purchasing wind energy credits to offset 100% of their electricity use in the U.S. 12 million pounds of carbon dioxide will be prevented and this is equivalent to taking 1,000 cars off the road or planting 1,600 acres of trees.
Green Building: The company's 2nd facility in Beloit, Wisconsin, earned the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification in 2007. To receive this certification, the building must conform to specific sustainable design criterias from building material selection to consumption of energy.
