Update Monday November 3rd, 2008:

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has added more areas to their advisory list for the tainted Hershey’s chocolate.  They will not list the stores, but advice to be on the look-out for the recalled candy in the Niagara Falls and Oshawa areas now as well.

Hershey's chocolates and candies recalled two years ago over salmonella fears and subsequently stolen from a recycling depot are being sold not just in Toronto but in other Ontario cities as well, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said Sunday.

Last Thursday, the CFIA said at least 640 recalled chocolate bars had been recovered from five stores in the Toronto area. The agency updated its advisory Sunday to include a small number of stores in the Niagara Falls and Oshawa areas.

Agency spokesman Garfield Balsom said more of the products might be for sale in other convenience and variety stores.

Recalled Hershey’s candy from two years ago has been popping up in the Toronto area.  The candy was recalled in 2006 after salmonella was found at the candy plant.  The contaminated candy was supposed to have been disposed of properly, but two men Adesh Roy Rambharack and Agampodi Desilva were accused of selling the tainted candy back to stores in 2007.  They were both arrested in June of last year; however the candy is still showing up.  Consumers have been warned to be on the look-out for codes ranging from 6417 to 6455 on candy packages.  So far the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has recovered nearly 640 products from five area convenience stores.  The names of these stores have not been released.

The recalled treats include Hershey's chocolate chips, milk and dark chocolate bars (with and without almonds), Glosettes, Eat-More bars, Reese peanut butter cups, Oh Henry! bars, Cherry Blossoms and other candy. The alert does not affect snack-sized bars sold under Halloween or Christmas packages.

So far, the agency has recovered 640 products from five independent convenience stores in Etobicoke and North York, said Garfield Balsom, spokesperson for the CFIA. Inspectors seized Oh Henry! bars, both regular and Rocky Road; Reese peanut butter cups; and Hershey's dark chocolate almond bars, he said.

"But that doesn't mean that's all that's out there," he noted.

Balsom would not name the stores because he said it would unfairly label them.

"We're more and more confident that the distribution was very localized," he said, stressing that big box stores such as Wal-Mart would not carry the recalled products.

"Big stores wouldn't be buying (candy) from the back of a van," he said.

The agency surveyed 100 stores, he said, and will continue its investigation.

In November 2006, Hershey's was forced to recall dozens of products after salmonella was detected at its plant in Smiths Falls, Ont.

Some of the recalled chocolate was sold to stores after being stolen in 2007 from a Toronto recycling depot that had been contracted to receive and dispose of the potentially contaminated products.

A list of the spoiled candy is as follows:

Only products with date codes from 6417 to 6455, produced from October 15 to November 10, are affected by this alert. The date codes can be found on the back of each unit.
